Petty Enterprises to Bring Back the No. 44

Horn FanSenior Writer IOctober 20, 2008

Robbie Loomis, Vice President for Petty Enterprises, announced on Friday that the team will be running the No. 44 for its second Sprint Cup Team.

The No. 45 will stay with Petty Enterprises; it will be used for Kyle Petty for however many races he runs in 2009.

Back in 2000, Kyle's son Adam was using the No. 45, but was tragically killed in Busch Series' practice session at New Hampshire. Shortly thereafter, Kyle switched from the No. 44 to the No. 45.

Petty Enterprises continued to sparingly use the No. 44 from 2000 to 2003. Then, in 2007, it was transferred to Michael Waltrip Racing for Dale Jarrett.

The organization remains high on Chad McCumbee as Bobby Labonte's teammate in 2009. Kyle, depending on sponsorship, may appear in a handful of races. Nothing official has yet been announced regarding Chad McCumbee.

Here's why the No. 44 is available. David Reutimann, along with his crew, will be switching to the No. 00 car. The No. 00 crew will then move to Marcus Ambrose's No. 47 team with JTG Motorsports, which will have an alliance with MWR in 2009.
