Today we learned that Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries of the New Jersey Nets are engaged. It doesn't come as a total surprise since rumors have been flying around for a couple of months now.
Kim has been looking for an athlete to put a ring on it for a while, and it seems like she finally found her man in Kris. Still, this is a pretty quick engagement for a couple that has only been dating for six months or so.
It got us thinking: Will Kim actually go through with the marriage, or has she just gotten caught up in the moment? Or is it just another way for Kim to make sure she stays in the headlines?
We'll take a look at Kim and other WAGs that are engaged (or close to it) to find out which one of them is most likely to be the next runaway bride.
DeWulf and star Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller were engaged in late 2010, and all signs point to a steady couple.
Miller, the goalie for team USA, allowed Sidney Crosby's game-winner in the gold medal game of the 2010 Winter Olympics, but he didn't carry it over into his relationship.
Similarly, DeWulf didn't let her roles in horrible movies like Ghosts of Girlfriends Past thrust her into a spiral of depression.
If these two can learn to keep their professional and personal lives separate, they may just make it to their wedding day.
Runaway Bride Potential: 1.0
Canadian Elisha Cuthbert loves the hockey players, and it appears she may have found her match with Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf.
The couple has been dating since 2008, and while there is no ring in the equation yet, that's a long time to be with someone who you're not going to marry.
Cuthbert has been out of the Hollywood spotlight for a while, and hockey players are never in the spotlight outside of Canada to begin with, so I give this couple a pretty good chance of making it to the altar.
That is, unless Sean Avery bursts out of the audience during the "any objections" portion.
Runaway Bride Potential: 2.0
Jessica's last relationship with an athlete was a bit more publicized, but it seems as if this one might be the real thing.
Simpson and former NFL tight end Eric Johnson have been engaged since November 2010, but that's not to say that the big day will actually happen.
Johnson is Yale-educated, and Simpson, well, let's just say she isn't exactly Ivy League material. But Jessica's fame is in its later stages, which gives me the idea that she's not doing this for publicity.
I give the couple decent odds of marriage, as long as they avoid Chicken of the Sea until the wedding.
Runaway Bride Potential: 3.0
Krystle Campbell is a Philadelphia Eagles cheerleader who's engaged to former NL MVP Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies.
On paper the sports connection seems like it would take them far, but the history of players dating cheerleaders is not good.
Campbell is also a second-grade teacher, so she may have to quit her gig as a cheerleader if this couple is going to actually say, "I do."
Runaway Bride Potential: 4.0
Minka Kelly has been engaged to Derek Jeter for over a year now, and they're still not married, so that could sound some alarm bells.
However, Jeter was famously called out by Hank Steinbrenner for focusing on "building mansions" rather than winning last season, so it's possible that he's just holding off on the marriage talk until the offseason.
Still, can't you see Minka having a series of nightmares the night before the wedding, tossing and turning in bed mumbling, "Vanessa Minnillo...Jessica Alba...Jessica Biel...Nooooooooooo!"
Runaway Bride Potential: 5.0
The world's richest soccer player, Cristiano Ronaldo, can have any woman he wants. From the looks of it, he picked a pretty good one in Russian SI cover model Irina Shayk.
The couple is engaged, and wedding plans have been set for this summer in Ronaldo's native Madeira, Spain.
Ronaldo, who has dated half of the Earth's model population, may be ready to settle down. But there may be something from his past that Shayk will find out before the marriage that makes her have second thoughts.
Runaway Bride Potential: 5.5
When girls are looking to date high-profile athletes to get headlines, they usually steer clear of Formula One racing.
That's why it's hard to think that Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger and F1 racer Lewis Hamilton's romance isn't the real deal.
The only red flag is that there seems to be a disconnect when it comes to the status of the relationship. It appears that Lewis Hamilton thinks the two are engaged, while Scherzinger says they're just dating.
They've already broken up and gotten back together once, so there's no reason why Nicole wouldn't leave him waiting at the altar.
Runaway Bride Potential: 6.0
Crawford, a former Miss Missouri, is engaged to high-profile Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.
Tony and America's Team have fallen on some tough times recently, so a marriage may be just the thing to put some spice back in his life.
A marriage may be good for Candice's brother, Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford, but the looming image of Tony's ex, Jessica Simpson, may cause some serious cold feet on Candice's part.
Runaway Bride Potential: 6.5
The Dancing with the Stars vixen has cha-cha'd her way over to journeyman pitcher Brad Penny. The couple is engaged, but we have our doubts about this one.
Penny previously dated Alyssa Milano, so he knows a thing or two about dating celebrities—and after Karina's recent Playboy spread, he's probably ready to lock her down as soon as possible. How this 300-pound monster keeps getting these types of girls will remain a mystery.
As they head towards the wedding day, sooner or later Smirnoff will wake up next to a cup of tobacco juice and think to herself, "What am I doing with my life?"
Runaway Bride Potential: 7.0
It's good to see that Chad Ochocinco finally found love after his reality dating show The Ultimate Catch. Unfortunately, he's engaged to Evelyn Lozada, who wasn't even a contestant on that show.
She actually appeared on an entirely different reality show, Basketball Wives, and the couple is currently in talks for a reality show of its own that will provide a glimpse into their lives leading up to marriage.
Needless to say, couples who star in reality shows don't exactly have a fantastic track record, and since they each will have starred in two, I'm not giving this one much hope.
Runaway Bride Potential: 7.5
Zuleyka Rivera is a former Miss Universe who's engaged to Dallas Mavericks backup point guard J.J. Barea.
We've been seeing a lot of Barea recently, as he is helping to lead the Mavs to the NBA Finals, but sometimes his play distracts us from the fact that he looks like this and is dating Miss Universe!
I'm sure J.J.'s a funny and incredibly charming guy, but when Rivera's all done up in her wedding gown and four-inch heels, towering over her soon-to-be husband at the altar, there's no way she doesn't make a run for it.
Runaway Bride Potential: 8.0
Alex Rodriguez apparently has a thing for blonde, kind-of-funny actresses. He moved from Kate Hudson to his current girlfriend, Cameron Diaz, without very much lag time.
This one could be serious, but with recent news that A-Rod may star in Cameron's next movie, this is starting to sound more like a business partnership than a relationship.
Even if the couple does get engaged, Diaz will have to stare at this picture on the wall after they move in together. That can't be good.
Runaway Bride Potential: 8.5
Khloe's married. Kourtney has a baby. It looks like Kim finally felt the pressure to settle down.
Kim and her newest athlete boyfriend, Kris Humphries, are engaged, but is the wedding ever really going to happen?
If you're Kris Humphries, the answer is a resounding "yes." Let's be honest—Humphries will never do better, especially with his Cro-Magnon forehead. Not only that, but Humphries is also putting up career numbers since he started dating Kim.
If you're Kim, the benefits are living in New York and being with someone she loves. The drawback is that Khloe already married a power forward, and a better one at that. Do you really want your brother-in-law destroying your husband in one-on-one in the backyard?
With that running through Kim's mind, it will be hard for her to make it down the aisle. Plus, can't you see it: "In the shocking finale of Kim and Kris: Wedding Bells, Kim gets cold feet and leaves in her private helicopter before the wedding."
This stuff writes itself.
Runaway Bride Potential: 9.0
The former MTV reality star recently got engaged to Bears QB Jay Cutler, but I still don't really see this one making it to the altar.
Cavallari seems to be looking to get back in the spotlight by marrying the first semi-famous athlete she could find, but there's a lot that can happen between now and the wedding day...particularly when you're marrying Jay Cutler.
Runaway Bride Potential: 4.0
Runaway Groom Potential: 9.5 (We all know that when the going gets tough, Jay Cutler quits.)
Maria Sharapova got engaged to "basketball" player Sasha Vujacic last October, so that's a pretty good reason to think she'll get married soon, right?
Not exactly. Sharapova recently said that she's in no rush to get married. At this stage, shouldn't she be holding her breath waiting for the big day?
Sharapova's career is on the upswing, and Sasha's incessant complaining has to get old after a while. If you ask me, all the signs are there for a runaway bride.
Runaway Bride Potential: 10.0
