MLB Trade Rumors: Could New York Mets Deal Jose Reyes to Indians, Giants?
WIlpon's comments in the New Yorker reinforce the assumption that most baseball analysts had already been under for months: the New York Mets are unlikely to re-sign shortstop Jose Reyes when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Given that the Mets are unlikely to compete this year—they're already 6.5 games out of first place, and Baseball Prospectus gives them just a 2.8% chance to make the playoffs—it makes sense that GM Sandy Alderson would at least consider shopping Reyes so that the team can get more in return than just compensatory draft picks.
But after the Wilpon article, Alderson might have trouble finding a good deal for Reyes because other clubs now know the Mets have to trade him. "It's clear from talking with folks on other teams: Wilpon's comments...cut into Alderson's maximum leverage," Buster Olney wrote.
So where might Reyes go? Popular opinion seems to lean towards the San Francisco Giants, but I think Reyes would be a fantastic fit for the Cleveland Indians. He has also been connected to the Brewers, Cardinals, Mariners, Red Sox, Reds, and Twins.
