WWE Smackdown: 7 Things We Want to See on Friday's Show
After watching Over the Limit and Raw on consecutive nights, SmackDown will be taped tonight from Spokane, Washington.
The pay-per-view featured SmackDown matches that saw Sin Cara defeat Chavo Guerrero, Ezekiel Jackson defeat Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett by disqualification, and saw Randy Orton defend his World Heavyweight Championship against Christian in a Match of the Year candidate.
Raw gave us a lot of head-scratching moments, but also a lot of storylines that will likely build toward Capitol Punishment and all the way until SummerSlam. SmackDown should likely do the same as we move into the hot summer months.
Here are seven things that would be nice to see happen this week on Friday Night SmackDown.
Sin Cara had a nice showing on his first WWE pay-per-view, defeating Chavo Guerrero at Over the Limit. It looked to me that Chavo had hurt himself, but I haven't heard anything about it since. It can't be the end of a feud with these two, so I would anticipate seeing Chavo back on commentary as Sin Cara dims the lights for his next opponent.
My pick for an opponent would be The Usos. Yes, both of them. Giving Sin Cara the disadvantage for once would help Sin Cara show how he could dispose two talents at once. It also opens the door for Chavo Guerrero to help Cara get the victory and further the feud. In Chavo's mind, he taught Sin Cara everything he knows. Also, if anyone is going to defeat Sin Cara, Chavo wants it to be him.
A rivalry that will finally happen before one or the other are disbanded, The Corre and Nexus can finally face one another. Now that Michael McGillicutty and David Otunga are tag team champions, they can face one of the best tag teams around now, Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel. Yes, those two make up one of the best teams around right now.
You could even see a match down the line with a six-man tag consisting of Barrett, Slater and Gabriel against McGillicutty, Otunga and Mason Ryan. This also frees up CM Punk to have his own match at Capitol Punishment. Then again, this is all that would make sense.
What happens when a superstar is going to win a championship match on pay-per-view, but doesn't at the last minute? They win it on the next episode of their brand.
Smackdown GM Teddy Long can pass a rematch with the stipulation of No DQ or banning Slater and Gabriel from ringside. It then gives Big Zeke the chance to lock in that torture rack submission hold and win the belt from Barrett.
Brodus Clay impressed many with his matches alongside of Alberto Del Rio right after his season of NXT ended. Since the WWE Draft took Del Rio away from Clay, Brodus has been missing for the most part.
Since seeing Clay, I have said that Brodus is the next great big man once the likes of Big Show, Kane and Mark Henry retire. While Del Rio gave Clay the main event exposure, aligning with a guy like Mark Henry can give Clay the guidance that he really needs. Also, imagine how unstoppable Mark Henry could be if Brodus Clay is in his corner.
It has been teased for a few weeks now, but this may be the time to finally turn The Great Khali heel again. I have been curious to see how Jinder Mahal will work on the main roster when he has his first match. I have seen his matches in FCW and think he can work well as a nice up-and-coming heel on Smackdown. Mahal is a perfect fit for the mid-card title hunt by the end of the year.
I would like to see Mahal's debut match with Khali in his corner. Give Mahal a squash match and have him call Khali in to dismantle the remains of the jobber. Reluctant at first, Khali would do it and the heel turn would commence.
Speaking of the Varsity Villain, Alex Riley may have broken away from The Miz last night, but he is still a member of the Friday Night Smackdown roster. Riley received a nice pop on RAW during the segment, even forming a "Riley" chant during the beatdown.
Riley may end up with a match against The Miz at some point, but he still needs to have his own match where he is on his own to show what he really has to offer. I don't know how I feel so much about Alex Riley as a face, but it does give him the chance to get rid of the Varsity Villain moniker, something that will keep him from the next step in his career.
I don't want to see Christian and Randy Orton try to outdo their fantastic match at Over the Limit with another title match on Smackdown. This is mainly because the result can easily be spoiled prior to being aired on Friday. I do think that the great match on Sunday merited Christian getting another chance at Capitol Punishment.
I can anticipate the night starting off with either Orton or Christian talking about the match and there being a match made for the main event with number one contendership status being thrown around. I would enjoy a match that features the likes of Sheamus, Christian, Mark Henry and even some contenders that haven't been considered before, like Alex Riley or Cody Rhodes.
