Ed DeChellis will leave his position as head coach at Penn State following a berth in the 2011 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament to take the same position at Navy.
David Jones of The Patriot News was the first to report that DeChellis will be leaving Penn State behind for another coaching opportunity, citing a source within the athletic department. According to the report, DeChellis has already accepted the job offer from Navy.
DeChellis will earn $450,000 per year at Navy, which is considerably less than what Penn State was paying him (reported $650,000). With his job security on the line at the end of his current contract, which does not expire until 2014, DeChellis "decided security was worth a dip in salary," according to Jones.
The news puts Penn State's men's basketball program in a tough situation as most coaching changes have already been completed in the annual coaching carousel. There is no word yet of possible candidates for the job to replace DeChellis
DeChellis was 117-139 in eight seasons with Penn State. This past season's trip to the NCAA Tournament was the first under DeChellis. Penn State lost to Temple on a last-second shot in the first round of the tournament. Penn State won the 2009 NIT under DeChellis in the best season he recorded in State College. Under DeChellis Penn State had just two seasons in which they played over .500.
