Preakness Stakes Results: Jockey Jesus Castanon Wins First Triple Crown Race
Preakness Stakes Results See jockey Jesus Castanon Surprise with Shackleford
Animal Kingdom's triple crown dreams are shattered by Shackleford at the Preakness Stakes, with Jockey Jesus Castanon steering his mount to a close victory. Read on for complete results and all the storylines surrounding the Preakness.
Coming into the 2011 Preakness, jockey Jesus Castanon had never won a Triple Crown race.
In fact, he hadn’t even won a Breeders’ Cup race.
But that all changed on Saturday, when Castanon rode 12-1 darkhorse Shackleford to victory, holding off the surging favorite Animal Kingdom by three-quarters of a length in 1:56.21.
And although many were probably hoping for the next Triple Crown winner this year in Animal Kingdom, Castanon’s story has a life of its own.
Castanon, born in Mexico City, was trained by his father in Mexico before coming to the United States in 1989. His father died in November.
Clearly emotional on television after the victory, Castanon said, “I know my dad is watching over me.”
