Preakness Predictions 2011: Animal Kingdom Ready to Carry over Derby Momentum?
Preakness Predictions 2011 May See Animal Kingdom Win Second Leg of Triple Crown
Morning Line Odds: 2-1
Trainer: Graham Motion
Jockey: John Velazquez
Animal Kingdom surprised many despite being a 20-1 longshot at the 2011 Kentucky Derby.
But now as he competes in the 2011 Preakness Stakes the secret is out: Animal Kingdom can run on dirt despite having a turf-heavy pedigree.
He's now a big favorite to win the second leg of the Triple Crown.
What worked to the three-year old colt's advantage at Churchill Downs was the fact that the rest of the pack ran a lot slower than expected and allowed him to make a game-winning move in the final turn.
The competitors at this year's Preakness may have a much different feel than at the Kentucky Derby with speedier competition in Dance City and Flashpoint a part of the 14-horse group expected to run on Saturday.
However, Animal Kingdom's trainer Graham Motion tells Bloodhorse.com:
I think he’s super. I feel very good about where he’s at. I think he should be able to adapt to any kind of pace.
In five career starts, Animal Kingdom has won three times and finished second the other two times. From what we've witnessed this chestnut colt just finds a way to be in the mix at the end.
Expect to see a similar performance from Churchill Downs where he with the middle of the pack before passing over the rest.
Animal Kingdom has it in him to win and anything but a Top 3 finish will be a disappointment.
