After his latest performance Saturday at Kinnick Stadium in which he piled up 217 yards and four touchdowns, Shonn Greene has violently shoved himself into the upper echelon of collegiate tailbacks.
The redshirt junior has moved into eighth on Iowa's all time rushing list, and after his performance against Wisconsin Iowa fans are starting the Heisman talk.
It's not out of the question for Greene to be considered for the award, as he has accumulated 1,154 yards on 177 attempts, and accounting for sixty Hawkeye points (ten touchdowns).
Compare his production to that of fellow Heisman hopeful Javon Ringer of Michigan State. Ringer has 263 carries already this season, and 1,179 yards with 14 touchdowns. With that amount of carries, Greene and his 6.5 yards per carry would have 1,715 yards, and 15 touchdowns.
Greene has been just the hard-nosed back the Hawks have longed for, and he has exceeded expectations of both fans and coaches. One group of people that should take note of this guy other than Heisman voters are NFL scouts.
Greene is 5'11", 235 pounds, and has the ability to leave defenders in the dust. As of now, I currently would project him as a second-third round draft choice pending a 40-yard dash time (which carries too much weight when evaluating in my opinion).
Green may not have the national recognition of a Moreno or McCoy, but he sure doesn't lack production. He is a strong candidate for the Heisman, possibly the nations top runner overall. Most importantly, he has Iowa primed for a bowl game.
