It seems that every year in the NBA Draft, some little-exposed international player ends up climbing his way into the top ten. The risk tied up in selecting a player who made his name beating up on inferior players is obvious; nevertheless, there will always be a team or two keen to take a flyer on an athletic foreign player with high upside.
Bismack Biyombo, the Congan prospect with the funny name, looks to buck the recurring theme of foreign flame-outs.
There's a lot to like about Biyombo's game, from his rare athletic ability to freakish physical gifts. With a 7-foot-7 wingspan, the 18-year-old from the Congo makes talent evaluators swoon. He has an uncanny instinct for positioning, as well as an indomitable will that helps him find the hoop and score once he has the basketball.
But how much of him do we overestimate because he was playing in a lesser league?
Truth is, we won't know until Biyombo suits up for an NBA game. But don't be surprised if some team with the requisite patience (and to some degree, the desperation) decides to take on this awe-inspiring beast of an athlete.
