"Growing Up With The UFC"

Ever since I was a little kid I watched the UFC.  I rememember the days where rounds were like 20 minutes, similar to the Pride format.  My favorite fighters back then were Maurice Smith and vicious leg kicks and Vitor Belfort and his god given hands.  When it came to seeing other fighters go at it, I hated watching UFC.  One man just hugging on top with full guard, boring ZZZZZ.

Finally the UFC evolved with more rules for where not to hit and making the kick while opponent is on the ground illegal.  Rounds were set as 3 3min rounds for non title fights and title matches were 5 5min rounds.  If the two men were on the ground and the man on top was doing nothing, the men were forced to stand up.

What I miss from the UFC was the quest for fighting the greatest style of fighting.  Even though we all know it is not the style that matters but more of how the fighter prepares and then performs on the octagon (preparation mentally, emotionally).  The style is what I miss nowadays from the tale of the tape.

The UFC has come a long way from becoming a totally barbaric event to more of a gentleman event that I believe would be nice to see in the Olympics.  As a child, looking at  bloodbaths in the Octagon was pretty graphic, but I was a child, I had no idea about what was humane and not humane.  Anyways I hope UFC implements the yellowcard system, which would be awesome and make fprevent fighters from respecting each other for the whole fight, while putting the crowd to sleep at the same time.
