Being Gay at BYU Was the Hardest Experience of My Life
Being a sports fan is one of my favorite things in the world.
There is nothing greater than attending a sporting event and cheering along with thousands of other fans and having your team emerge victorious.
I went to BYU.
I had an easy time being a sports fan, but I had a difficult time being a sports fan at my college.
The Mormon faith is not accepting of gays and probably never will be. So one can imagine that going to a college owned by the LDS church was very difficult for me.
I wanted to be myself, but I couldn't. I could not be an openly gay man at that school, otherwise I could have been expelled, beat up, or worse.
Being gay is not easy anywhere, but there it is infinitely worse.
Now, I know for a fact that there are many gay people at BYU. I got to know many of them during my time there.
I even knew some of the athletes there that were gay. (Of course, I won't mention their names out of respect.)
I'm sure many of you find it difficult to imagine a gay man who is a sports nut; you probably think of gay men as feminine and weak.
This is not always the case.
I always wanted to be an athlete, but couldn't out of fear of what people would do if they found out my secret.
So I guess the point of this article is to let everyone know that being a sports fan has no boundaries.
Acceptance is always the best route.
