Setting the Sacramento Kings Straight: Why Make More Moves Now?

The Sacramento Kings have all the veterans they need for the up and coming season and Geoff Petrie already stated, after the Ron Artest trade, that there would be little moves in the immediate future.

A trade before the deadline is certainly possible, but don’t get your hopes that anything will happen anytime soon.

The notion that the Kings lack veterans and need them for this season is ill-founded. Brad Miller, Kevin Martin, Bobby Jackson, and Mikki Moore are all the Kings got right now.

Adding a veteran such as Alonzo MouringBonzi Wells, or P.J. Brown is pointless and would only serve to screw up future chemistry among the younger players who need playing time.

Mourning, Wells, and Brown would do nothing to help the Kings. The notion that these guys would help the Kings is almost hilarious. And the notion that the Kings either trade or sign a veteran immediately is falling way too much into binary impatient thinking.

Sure, Wells helped the Kings come close to defeating the San Antonio Spurs a few years ago, but the Kings just got rid of one head-case in Ron Artest, so why would they want another. In addition, Wells is a wing player, for the most part, and the Kings have a team full of wing players.

Wells can occasionally play on the low block, but John Salmons is on the verge of receiving the most improved player of the year award.

If these players are viewed as being at the top of the list of available free agents, the list is pretty much in the dumps.

If the Kings sink to the bottom of the standings in the Western Conference, and a trade does occur, the Kings will acquire players with contracts that expire the summer after next.

The Kings are already in the top five teams in terms of how much cap space they will have during the summer of 2010, a summer which is expected to offer big-time free agents.

But expect Petrie to be very, very cautious with any moves since the young players are going to need a majority of this year and next to prove themselves.
