Hey guys, what's up?
I know it's been a little while since I last wrote an article on here but after watching Raw last week, I felt the urge to write about this subject! The part of the show I am talking about was the final match of the evening, which saw Kane take on Nexus enforcer Mason Ryan.
During the match, we saw Mason Ryan manhandle and seemingly dominate Kane with great ease for a while before Nexus leader CM Punk came out and interfered causing a disqualification.
What really had me thinking was what transpired afterwards. After disposing of Punk, Kane attempted a chokeslam on Ryan only to fight out of it and respond with what seemingly looked like some form of a Rockbottom.
After that, Big Show came out to help his partner only to receive a spear from Ryan for his troubles. After this moment, Ryan made his way up the ramp by himself, leaving the rest of the Nexus lying in the ring.
Now flashback to the year 2002, and specifically to a December evening in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. For anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about, it's the Armageddon pay per view. That night we saw two epic championship matches with Triple H defeating Shawn Michaels in a Three Stages of Hell match to regain the World Heavyweight Championship and we also saw Kurt Angle defeating The Big Show to win the WWE Championship.
Also on that night we saw the PPV debut of a monster that went by the name of Batista.
He participated in a match against...guess who? If you said Kane, you'd be correct.
Now in this match Batista didn't just participate, he contended with Kane the whole way and with thanks to a little bit of help from the "Dirtiest Player in the Game", Ric Flair, won via a sit down powerbomb.
Now the similarities between the two don't end there. Firstly, they are both built very similarly, both 6' 6", both around 280-300lbs and both absolutely stacked. They also both started off their WWE careers as enforcers for heel stables, and they also have a similar powerful wrestling style. Even though they have a different finishing move, Ryan's slam looks quite it would have a similar impact to Batista's spinebuster.
One difference that is quite notable between the two is age. Ryan is only 29, whereas when Batista started in the WWE he was 33, which means that the enforcer has a lot more time on his side. However one thing that goes against Ryan is his strong Welsh accent, which many people will struggle to understand. However, I think that the longer he spends in America, his accent may become a bit weaker and a bit more understandable.
With regards to the future, it certainly looks like the departure of Ryan from the Nexus has begun, which if it does actually happen will mean that it will be a lot earlier than Batista's departure from Evolution. This would show that the WWE have faith in this giant to become a successful singles competitor. He did have a strong singles career in FCW, where he held the FCW Heavyweight Champion for about seven months.
As for potential story-lines, the obvious first one would be a feud with Nexus leader CM Punk, with it being more likely that Ryan would take the Batista route in turning against the heel group and becoming face. After this feud, there are quite a lot of potential feuds for Ryan on either brand.
Personally after the Punk feud, I'd have Ryan going for one of the mid-card titles to build him up for a run in the main event scene, which could happen either on Raw or SmackDown, with it more likely being SmackDown! That being said these events should occur over the next couple of years which means that, as everyone knows, anything can happen!
So what do you guys think? Can you see Ryan becoming the next Batista? Also can you see him going on to the main event scene sometime in the future, like Batista?
Feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think!
