The WWE has done some pretty silly things in the past couple of years but I believe that they have outdone themselves this time by having Randy Orton defeat Christian for the World Heavyweight Title.

Randy Orton has just been on Smack Down for a few weeks and already they are pushing him as the top guy on the blue brand, this seems to devalue the brand itself and all of the competitors on the show. With this push for Orton as the top guy, the WWE needs to not only save the value of a world title reign, they need to create a buzz around the world title and that is why I believe the WWE needs to turn Christian into a heel.

The title push of Orton’s reminds me of how Rob Van Dam was instantly rewarded with championship gold in TNA last March and we all remember how well that storyline went. Now I know the WWE isn’t TNA, but they have been known to drop the ball on a storyline every now and again. I think that the WWE can save creditability for Christian by turning him into a heel against not only Orton, but the entire WWE Universe.

Christian’s career has been a long journey full of ups and downs, but it all seemed to come full circle at Extreme Rules when he defeated Alberto Del Rio for the World Title. Christian had all the momentum behind him after the victory and yet it seemed like the WWE killed the run of the peeps by having Randy Orton defeat Christian in a competitive match this past Friday for the World Title.

Now there have been guys who have gotten even bigger pushes after a title run like The Rock in 1999 to Kurt Angle in 2003. However there have been guys who struggled greatly just to get air time after a title reign, (Randy Orton in 2004, Jack Swagger in 2010, and Sheamus in early 2010). The WWE now is in a tough spot on how to book Christian after the defeat because it is a hit or miss process but to turn Christian heel would not only give him a re-push, but it would also get the Smackdown brand some creditability it oh so needs.

Christian has not been a heel since coming back into the WWE fold in 2009 as a part of the ECW brand. Christian has been a mid-card baby face who like Matt Hardy, only was there to put over some of the younger heel talent in the company. But now, if the WWE turns Christian heel, it will give the blue brand a top tier heel talent who can put over their younger baby face talent and also  feud with top stars in the company who aren’t exactly in line for a world title push.

The heel push would do wonders for Christian’s character and his in-ring work because now he would be the guy who’s controlling the match pace and Christian’s best work is considered by many to be when he was a heel from 2003 to 2005 in the WWE.

Christian was also a brilliant heel in TNA back in 2006 when he was going against Sting. That feud alone really made Christian a bona-fide main event-er in all of professional wrestling. So if the WWE tries to re-create the heel magic for Captain Charisma, then they may strike gold.

Randy Orton’s world title reign maybe destined for greatness but if the WWE decides to make Orton’s reign like Stone Cold’s title reign in 1998, then he needs to have stellar matches with top guys in the company and he also needs to make every guy he works with look great. This would not be difficult if the WWE has Orton booked against Christian because then you have two veterans who know how to excite the fans. It’s a feud that the WWE has never tried and it could end up being one of the best feud’s we see in 2011.

So we may end up remembering Christian as a one hit wonder by the time May ends, but if the WWE plays their cards right then we could see Christian as the true face of Smack Down.
