Sean Avery Paving the Way For Other Athletes to Speak Out For Gay Rights

The New York Rangers Sean Avery may have made a historical PSA on Tuesday. In a video that also featured other prominent figures of New York, Avery had this to say:

I'm Sean Avery and I'm a New Yorker for Marriage Equality. I treat everyone the way I expect to be treated and that applies to marriage. Committed couples should be able to marry the person they love. Join me in supporting marriage equality.

He has already taken heat from an NHL agent that doesn't even represent him. Who knows what kind of scrutiny Avery has faced behind the scenes.

But he has stood up for what he believes in and Avery is laying the groundwork for other athletes to follow. The sports culture in America is completely anti-gay. In fact, using the word "gay" to describe anything bad is a common occurrence.

Watching Avery make a stance like this should open the minds of other athletes in sports across the country. It's a harmless video that has a big impact on young kids that are struggling with their beliefs.

Athletes are some of the most recognizable and influential people in our country for better or for worse, using their platform to send a positive message like this is something that more athletes need to be doing.

This movement is a slow one, but expect more famous athletes to express their opinions and stances on this hot button issue in wake of Avery's actions.
