Pacquiao vs. Mosley: Pacman Set to Rake in Massive Purse for Mosley Bout
Pacquiao vs. Mosley Sees Big Purse for Manny In Saturday's Bout
Manny Pacquiao is the most well-known boxer in the world. His fight with Shane Mosley on Saturday is the most highly-anticipated bout since his last fight with Antonio Margarito, and he's officially a global icon.
Now, he's about to be paid like one. According to a report from the Manila Bulletin, Pacman could be making up to $30 million on Saturday's bout with Sugar.
Yep, you read that right. Pacman is already guaranteed $20 million for this fight, even if no one shows up to watch, and no one buys the Pay-Per-View package on Showtime. But, if certain goals are met in terms of the number of viewers, Pacman's cut of the cash figures to rise in a hurry.
Bob Arum, president of Top Rank Promotions, explained why Pacman got a bigger cut of the pie:
“The total will not be less than for the (Antonio) Margarito fight which was 1.2 million (buys). How much more it will do remains to be seen but I am optimistic that it’ll do a lot more.”
Arum added: “He probably could look forward to as much as $10 million extra.”
But, don't expect Shane Mosley to get an equal cut of the profits. According to the report, Sugar is in line to make a guaranteed $5 million from the fight, with incentives that could double that total, depending on the Pay-Per-View revenues.
While that may not seem fair, remember that Sugar is in a major rut, having dropped two of his last three bouts, and is without a doubt less of a draw than Pacman is, so it stands to reason that the Filipino sensation would get more money.
In the end, this is looking like a fantastically lucrative fight for just about everyone involved, as early ticket figures and television revenues are pointing towards new records in terms of revenue from the bout. Clearly, Arum and Top Rank know how to put on a show, as this figures to be a widely watched fight despite the fact that Pacman is so heavily favored.
