Pacquiao vs. Mosley Bout Sees Pacman Take On Poverty With Glove Choice
When Manny Pacquiao steps into the ring against Shane Mosley on Saturday night, the pound-for-pound greatest will be promoting the fight on poverty, as well.
Pacman will don yellow gloves, eschewing the traditional red or blue gloves typically used in a fight of this magnitude, in an effort to promote the boxer's campaign to end world poverty.
Per the New York Daily News' report:
"All of my life I've had to fight," Pacquiao said. "As a child I had to fight to eat. Now when I fight the Filipinos call me a hero. But the biggest fight in my life is not boxing. The biggest fight in my life is how to end poverty in my country. I'm going to wear yellow gloves for the fight to end poverty.
"I'm asking you to join us and wear something yellow. It's about hope. We can only win this fight together. Unity is the best weapon for us."
Pacman has long been a standup citizen, even getting himself elected to Parliament in his native Philippines because of his anti-poverty stance. He's been incredibly active in the fight against poverty in his home country, and has continued to push for reform in the process.

Of course, none of this would be possible if Pacmann weren't fighting one of the other class acts in sports in Mosley. The pair seem to lack the vitriol that can be seen between other boxers (Floyd Mayweather and anyone, for instance), and if that weren't the case, Pacquiao probably wouldn't be able to do it, since Sugar had to agree to let him wear them.
Could the gloves have an impact on the fight? Frankly, that seems unlikely; if Pacman or Mosley thought the gloves wouldhave any kind of impact one way or another on this bout, odds are good they wouldn't have allowed it to happen.
In the end, this is a great move from one of the class acts of sports, even if it is a symbolic gesture. It also reminds us just how classy Shane Mosley is for allowing Pacman to try and promote the fight against poverty with the yellow gloves.
