Jim Caldwell, the assistant head coach for the Indianapolis Colts, will replace Tony Dungy if the coach retires, owner Jim Irsay said.
Dungy is expected to give Irsay an answer regarding his return by early next week, and the owner said he planned to speak with Dungy this weekend. Irsay also said he would be willing to allow Dungy to fly to Tampa Bay to watch his son play high school football on Friday nights next fall.
Caldwell has been a Dungy assistant for seven years—one in Tampa Bay and six in Indy. Caldwell, 52, coached Wake Forest for eight years.
Commentary: Caldwell removed himself from consideration for jobs in Baltimore and Atlanta, prompting speculation that he knows Dungy will not return. Promoting Caldwell would be a wise move if Dungy retires because it would maintain stability on a team that is a Super Bowl contender. Meanwhile, however, Irsay is doing whatever he can to entice Dungy to stay, and the owner is to be commended for recognizing he has one of the league's best coaches. All will be settled by early next week.
Fantasy Football Impact: None.
