2011 NFL Draft Results: What Undrafted Free Agents Should New Orleans Be After?
2011 NFL Free Agency: What safeties could New Orleans grab in free agency?
It takes more than one safety for an NFL defense to function well. However, the New Orleans Saints only have one safety, Malcolm Jenkins, under contract. The Saints were expected to address the need in the 2011 NFL Draft but they didn't.
Now, they must do so in free agency whenever the NFL lockout is finally over. Naturally, New Orleans will look at incumbent players, most notably Roman Harper.
But what players could the team find that went undrafted? Pat Kirwan of NFL.com points out Deandre McDaniel and Joe Lefeged. Both have great skill. McDaniel was the more productive college player but comes with character concerns.
Kirwan points out Lefeged has strong character and speed. Both attributes provide a great base to build a sound NFL player.
The Saints could bring back veteran Darren Sharper. With that type of leadership in the locker room and during practice, a player like McDaniel could find his way quickly and stay out of trouble. A player like Lefeged could turn his athletic ability into production.
