Pacquiao vs. Mosley: Is Las Vegas the Best Boxing Venue?
Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley will go it at in the year's first big mega-fight on Saturday, May 7, for Pacquiao's WBO welterweight crown. The bout will be held at the 17,000-seat MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, which led us here at Bleacher Report to wonder .... what's the best place to hold a big boxing match?
Las Vegas is awesome, no doubt it. There's something about a fight weekend when the whales come to town and the gambling is out of the control and the women are all gorgeous and the money is flowing like wine at a Roman bacchnalia.
It's pretty neat to be a part of, that's for sure, and Vegas also brings out the celebrities.
But, for my money, there are two places I think serve as the best venue in boxing. One, to catch a sparring session or a club fight, nothing beats the intensity of Philadelphia. Philly boxing is legendary.
But for a big fight, there's nothing like Madison Square Garden in New York. The Garden got out of the boxing business for a while back in the 1990s and it lost some of the luster. But from a historical standpoint, well, it's like the difference between playing Broadway and off-Broadway.
