The UFC made its debut in the province of Ontario on Saturday, April 30, presenting UFC 130 at Rogers Centre. The promotions first stadium event drew a crowd of over 55,000 fans and brought in a live gate of over $12 million.
The event started off with the first four fights ending by submission, knockout or technical knockout.
The main card started with Ben Henderson putting the loss to Anthony Pettis behind him with a solid performance that earned him the unanimous decision victory over Mark Bocek.
Vladimir Matyushenko and Jason Brilz were expected to put on a wrestling clinic during their bout, but "The Janitor" seemed to have different plans, knocking out Brilz in 20 seconds.
Lyoto Machida then sent Randy Couture into retirement with a devastating front kick that was equal parts Anderson Silva and the "Karate Kid." The kick gave the knockout victory to Machida at the 1:05 mark of Round Two.
The co-main event between Jose Aldo and Mark Hominick started out quickly with Aldo displaying his amazing speed and striking ability, however, he was unable to put away Hominick and he eventually faded.
Aldo was still able to hurt Hominck, but their was no quit in the Canadian who showed a great deal of heart battling through a huge hematoma that grew on his forehead.
The headline event featured Georges St-Pierre and Jake Shields. St-Pierre used the same game plan for Shields that he used for Josh Koscheck, avoiding the ground game of his opponent and keeping the fight a striking battle.
Shields was able to do some damage to St-Pierre and he did end St-Pierre's streak of 30 consecutive rounds won. St-Pierre's game plan seemed to put Shields off his plan the former Strikeforce champion fell to St-Pierre via unanimous decision.
