As expected, the Eagles selected a running back on day three to come in and compete for a backup spot behind LeSean McCoy.  With the 149th overall selection, the Eagles Dion Lewis out of Pittsburgh

Lewis will look to team up with Shady, and form a duo of running backs out of Pittsburgh.

Many will be critical of Lewis' size out of college, much like they were of McCoy's.  Lewis stands at 5'7" and 197 pounds and is a similar player to McCoy.

Despite his small size, Lewis carried a heavy workload in college, recording 325 carries in 2009 and 219 carries in 2010.  In both seasons, he ran for over 1,000 yards.

Of course, we know that the Eagles don't look for running backs who can solely run the ball.  Running backs in the Eagles system need to be able to catch the ball as well.  In college, Lewis had 52 receptions for 405 yards and a touchdown.

I think Lewis is a solid player who fits the Eagles system well.  He doesn't have break away speed, but is a very quick runner who can make defenders miss and get up the field fast.

I don't think he'll have a huge impact on the 2011 season, but I think he could be a good player to take some pressure off McCoy down the road.
