UFC 129 St-Pierre vs. Shields: Fight Card, News, Predictions, Results, and More!
Bleacher Report's Jordy McElroy:
All 24 fighters participating in Saturday night's UFC 129 card took to the scales on Friday at the official weigh-in at Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
The record-breaking event will be headlined by welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and former Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields.
Riding a 15-fight win streak over quality opposition, Shields hasn't lost in over six years, and he is easily one of the top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in the world today. Still, many fans are unfamiliar with the Cesar Gracie student, and he'll enter the octagon on Saturday night as a significant underdog.
"It's going to be an amazing fight. I've been looking forward to it for years," Shields said in front of a pro-GSP crowd. "[Georges St-Pierre] is an amazing fighter. People can boo all they want, but I'm bringing the belt home with me. It's going to be an all out war, one you will never forget."

UFC fans have not been pleased from past non-title fights that have concluded to three rounds rather than five rounds, especially once controversy revolves heavily on the final decision. And according to UFC president Dana White, fans might just get what's coming to them.
MMAWeekly reports that White was asked about the topic at a UFC Q&A session at the UFC Fan Expo in Toronto, and he said the UFC is nearing closer to the idea.
"We were actually going to start it Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos, but we had already made the fight,” White said.
“We had already made the fight so it’s kind of hard to go back to those guys after you already make the fight and say you know what this is going to be five (rounds) instead of three (rounds).”

Most MMA fans remember the infamous brawl that took place following the main event between Jake Shields and Dan Henderson at the Strikeforce: Nashville card.
For those who do not remember, after Shields defeated Henderson to retain his Strikeforce middleweight title, Jason "Mayhem" Miller entered the cage and interrupted Shields' post-fight interview to ask for a rematch.
What followed was a melee involving Shields, Strikeforce lightweight champion Gil Melendez, Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz, UFC welterweight Nate Diaz, and other members of the Cesar Gracie fight team attacking the interloping Miller.
Miller was suspended by the Tennessee State Athletic Commission following the incident.
Dana White speaking to MMAWeekly had this to say about Miller's absence from Strikeforce following that incident, "Mayhem Miller he had a contract with those guys, he wasn’t being fought because he couldn’t fight on Showtime, he couldn’t fight on CBS, so he was in a bad position," White said. "So that’s why that (signing with the UFC) happened."
White continued, “Mayhem, he’s banished from CBS for life."

How would a light heavyweight showdown between Jon Jones (13-1) and Fedor Emelianenko (31-3, 1 NC) play out?
UFC color commentator, Joe Rogan, asked Jones about his thoughts on facing a fighter like Fedor at today's UFC Q&A with the seven champions.
Jones quickly let out an "ewww" when asked about the fight. But all in all, Jones said he would be honored to face a fighter of Fedor's caliber and legendary status as one of the best of all time.
Jones also said he would love to have the possibility to face current Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, Dan Henderson (27-8).
A Jones versus Fedor fight certainly drew the interest of the crowd who was cheering for Jones who is currently injured and had to withdraw from his upcoming fight with Rashad Evans for his light heavyweight belt.
The champion Q&A aired live on UFC.tv for free and featured all current champions from the UFC.

UFC President Dana White thinks he knows the secret to making the much talked about Fedor Emelianenko vs. Dan Henderson fight happen, let others handle the negotiations.
"I've been out of it." White told MMAJunkie.com. "Me involved in that situation would only make matters worse."
"Lorenzo's working on it. Me getting anywhere near that thing? You'll never see that fight."
That attitude clearly shows the MMA fan that White and Lorenzo Fertitta are true fans of the sport and they will use whatever approach necessary to bring the fans the fights that are in demand.
The fight does seem to have hit a bit of a stalemate in negotiations.
Bleacher Report's Michael Evans:
Nick Diaz has been very verbal lately about feeling unappreciated. He feels that he is underpaid by Strikeforce, overworked and he is about fed up with it. He plans to make a venture into the prize ring before he returns to the cage.
After his recent win over Paul Daley, in which he defended his Strikeforce welterweight title for a record third time, Diaz made comments that he was not being enough. Recently he has voiced that he wants to participate in a boxing match, which is in his current Strikeforce contract.
Damon Martin of MMAweekly reported that Diaz has voiced that he wants to box before he fights in mixed martial arts again.
Dana White said recently that he wants to speak to Diaz following UFC 129 to try and figure the situation out. He said, "I’m going to sit down with Nick Diaz, literally, after this fight and try to figure out what’s next for him."

Jake Shields will meet UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre at UFC 129, and he says that he is aware of some small holes in the champions game that no other fighter has been able to exploit in St-Pierre's last eight fights.
In an interview with Ariel Helwani from MMA Fighting, Shields wasn't about to go into detail about St-Pierre's weaknesses, but he is prepared to take advantage of them.
"The guy doesn't have a lot of weaknesses, so it's just finding small holes. He has small weaknesses here and there," Shields said. "He has small weaknesses in his stand-up, small weaknesses in his jiu-jitsu. His wrestling has been looking pretty amazing, but I've been watching some tapes, seeing some small things here and there, and I plan on going out and exploiting them."
As a heavy favorite heading into the fight, some are wondering whether St-Pierre may be looking past Shields. Shields doesn't think that St-Pierre and his team are slacking at all in preparation for the fight, though.

Who better to welcome the UFC to Toronto than Chuck Liddell, the man who's been called the "face" of mixed martial arts?
Though his fighting days may be behind him (for now), you wouldn't know it from the crowds reaction. A swarm of hungry fans and wannabe fighters packed into an exclusive seminar hosted by Liddell Friday at the UFC Fan Expo in Toronto.
Once class was in session, Professor Chuck gave the gathered crowd a lesson in "Iceman 101," showing a little bit of the skills that made him the dominant UFC Light-Heavyweight champion. Those skills included his famous "sprawl," the power right hand, and even some offensive wrestling and "ground and pound" offense.
Throughout the session, Liddell was a font of energy, speaking softly but with a clear enthusiasm, walking around the session and offering critiques and tips to the prospective brawlers.

In yet another move by the UFC to hype up the heavily anticipated UFC 129 main event of Georges St-Pierre taking on Jake Shields, the welterweight champion made an appearance on ESPN’s Sports Science.
This writer feels that it would really be a mistake to not watch the three minute clip from the show posted below, but pointing out some highlights will give readers an idea of just how much of a force GSP truly is.
The first statistic of interest came when St-Pierre performed a VO2 max test. This revealed that GSP’s anaerobic threshold, the process that makes lactic acid and causes athletes to fatigue, is 15 percent more efficient than most fighters.
While the exact details were not revealed, Sports Science host John Brenkus explained that “when most fighter’s hit their ceiling (maximum threshold), GSP is at 85 percent of his max.”
Next, the Canadian welterweight title holder is strapped with a wireless accelerometer to measure how powerful his strikes are.

As has become the norm during fight week, UFC president Dana White is posting video blogs in the days leading up to the event. On Friday, he posted the second of his UFC 129 video blogs.
The video starts off innocently enough, with White and a UFC employee detailing just how large UFC 129 is compared to their other events. To put it in perspective, the floor of the Rogers Centre in Toronto will hold as many fans as the UFC normally packs into the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
From there it's off to the press conference, where White runs into the nattily attired Jose Aldo and Georges St-Pierre, as well as the not so well dressed Randy Couture—who compares his attire to that of a "mechanic."
The video ends with White sending his normal event Twitter ticket giveaway. White is then mobbed almost immediately by fans looking to get tickets to the sold-out event.
The sheer number of fans that begin crowding White is overwhelming, and he retreats to higher ground. White shows his appreciation to the security guards that got "f***ed up" during the rush.
After the crowd disperses and White is safely in his car, he reflects on the giveaway. "Holy s**t," White exclaims. "That's why I was nervous about doing it here."
When asked how that giveaway compares to California, White responds, "Not even f***ing close."

Bleacher Report's Dana Becker:
For Ultimate Fighting Championship's heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez, the long and painful road to recovery now has a light at the end of the tunnel.
Speaking with reporters recently at a UFC press conference, president Dana White stated that Velasquez is right on track from shoulder surgery to return to the cage in October.
"Cain's good. He's coming along great," White told MMAWeekly.com. "He's actually going to be here (in Toronto for UFC 129: St. Pierre vs. Shields)."
Velasquez, 9-0 in his career, was last seen defeating Brock Lesnar for the heavyweight title in Anaheim, Calif., in 2010. Now, he is preparing to meet either Lesnar in a rematch or contender Junior Dos Santos.
Both Lesnar and Dos Santos are currently coaching teams on The Ultimate Fighter, and will meet in June to decide the No. 1 contender.

Randy Couture made his UFC debut on May 30, 1997 at UFC 13.
That event took place in front of a crowd of 5,100 people at the Augusta Civic Center in Augusta, Georgia.
On Saturday, April 30, 2011, Couture will fight in what he says will be his last ever MMA fight at UFC 129, in front of a crowd of 55,000 people.
Couture, a member of the UFC Hall of Fame, has indicated that whether he wins, loses or draws this fight against Lyoto Machida at UFC 129, it will be his last.
However, UFC president Dana White has his doubts as to whether or not this will in fact be Couture's last fight.
"This guy is one of the top 10 best in the world. And I think he's one of those guys that says, 'Yeah, I'm retiring. I'm done.' It's hard to do," White told MMAFighting.com.
"You see Chuck Liddell. You don't know what I went through to get Chuck Liddell to retire. And I don't think anybody would disagree that it was time for him to retire.
"Who knows with this guy? I'm not saying it's not time for him to retire but who knows? He's such a competitor that every time there's something out there and he says, 'You know what? I think I can beat this guy,' I think he's going to come out and try to do it," White said.
"I honestly don't know of another fight he wants. I'm sure there's a couple of matchups out there. If the right thing happens, I think Randy will jump in and take the fight. And I think it's always fun to see him fight. If he's 62 and can still do it, I want to see it."
Couture has built up a great deal of goodwill during his career and if he does decide to come out of retirement at some point, there will surely be a demand to see that fight—whomever the opponent.
