Ryan Mallett: Patriots Coach Bill Belichick Speaks About His Controversial Pick
Ryan Mallett of Arkansas was chosen by the New England Patriots in the third round Friday night, the 74th pick overall after the gunslinger slid down the draft board amidst rumors of his alleged drug use.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick just appeared on the NFL Network and explained his choice.
"We thought there was real good value on the board with Ryan," Belichick said. "He had a real good college career, first with Michigan ... He's a football guy, comes from a football family ... He was great value for us."
Asked about the position, currently manned by reigning NFL MVP Tom Brady, Belichick said: "When you don’t have depth at that position it can be a problem. Hopefully we have it now."
Belichick did not talk about, nor was he asked, about Brady mentoring Mallett.
