It was a shocking slide for the player that many experts said was the most pro-ready quarterback of any in the draft, including No. 1 selection Cam Newton of Auburn.
But rumors of drug use continued to dog Mallett throughout the combine and the draft process, which accounted for his descent down the draft boards.
Finally, the Patriots took a flyer on him and he might have ended up in the best spot of all -- he'll be mentored by New England quarterback Tom Brady, who still has a few good years left in him, to be sure.
