So in case you missed it, last night the Minnesota Vikings selected their quarterback for the future in former Florida State Seminole Christian Ponder.

Ponder, who will now get the chance to battle for the starting spot with Joe Webb, can be seen as a huge reach by Minnesota in the 2011 NFL Draft if only for the reason he could have been picked up later in the later draft rounds.

The way I look at it: If you know you want the talent and that talent is still available, the team needs to take him or risk watching him go to another team.

This is exactly the plan executed by Vikings brass last night with their No. 12 overall selection.

Granted, the Vikes may have been looking to trade down which was then muffed by the clock striking zero, but regardless, they made a decent pick and are now fully invested in their future at the QB position.

Ponder, who has been portrayed as a liability during the latter part of his college career because of nagging injuries, now has the chance to once again prove to scouts and fans that his injury issues are a thing of the past.

I say “once again” because Ponder has already shown during his pre-draft practices that he is ready for the next level as an intelligent, fleet-of-foot quarterback.

Garnering Senior Bowl MVP honors, Ponder led the South side to a 24-10 victory while also throwing for two touchdown passes on 132 yards. Ponder also had a stellar NFL Combine that many teams took notice of and helped move his name up the list of hopeful NFL QB prospects.

Look for Ponder to start right out of the gates for the Minnesota Vikings as he proves to the world that he is the most NFL-ready QB prospect in the 2011 NFL draft.
