2011 NFL Draft Results: Bengals Left with Little Choice but to Draft WR
2011 NFL Draft Results In Bengals Hands Forced
Pick: A.J. Green, WR, Georgia
A.J. Green is a fine player and will turn out to be a great NFL receiver.
But there has to be some trepidation about this pick for Bengals fans.
For one, the latest ramblings from Chad Ochocinco suggest he wants out of Cincinnati. So to take a wide receiver two days after his complaints that Marvin Lewis hurt his feelings "so I'm gone" does make the Green selection seem a bit of an impulse move.
But if you've been paying attention for the last few months, the Bengals have been interested in a receiver all offseason, perhaps in preparation to trade Ochocinco or flat out release him.
So drafting Green has a significant purpose on that front. But as far as picking him in some attempt to convince Carson Palmer to come back and not demand/force a trade out of town: that's a long shot.
There were two other options for the Bengals.
But quarterback wasn't ideal considering the clouds around Palmer as well as Blaine Gabbert. The other choice may have been Patrick Peterson, but if they can re-sign Johnathan Joseph they are set with two (Leon Hall) pretty solid longterm corners.
