UFC 129 Special KO of the Day: Lyoto Machida Knocks out Rashad Evans

Sal DeRoseCorrespondent IJune 7, 2016

Here it is, a special UFC 129 dedicated "Knockout of the Day" video.

Lyoto Machida entered this fight on a tear, a perfect 14-0 in his career. Machida knocked Evans down in the first round and was able to keep Evans off his game.

It was in the second round though that he did his damage. Machida threw a flurry of perfectly placed punches and rocked Evans. Then it was late in the second round that Machida landed the perfect punch and knocked out Evans before he even hit the mat.

This knockout created what is the creepiest face I have ever seen when Evans was out cold.

With a win over Evans, it helped start what was called "The Machida Era" even though it was short-lived. This helped create a hype train that only Jon Jones has surpassed with Machida's great elusiveness and striking abilities, no one thought he could be beat.

Since knocking out Evans, Machida has gone on to defend the belt once successfully against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua controversially, and then lost by a knockout in their rematch. Machida is on a two-fight losing streak and fights Randy Couture at UFC 129 this Saturday.

Since the fight Evans has won his only two outings against Rampage and Thiago Silva. Evans has also become the number one contender for the light heavyweight championship. Evans will fight next at UFC 133 against Phil Davis on August 6.
