2011 NFL Draft Grades: Report Card for Every Pick of Round 1
Joe Robbins/Getty Images
The 2011 NFL Draft has officially kicked off, and in a year without a clear-cut No. 1 pick, along with uncertainty about a possible impending lockout, there are more questions than ever.
Will as many as three quarterbacks be taken within the first 15 picks, despite the fact that the top-15 pro talents are at positions other than QB? Will a potential rookie salary cap change draft strategy? Will defensive linemen rule the first round?
I'm here to help you decipher which picks fill needs, which teams are picking up major value, and which teams dropped the ball in scouting.
While I don't share Mel Kiper's meticulously crafted hair or his angry outlook on life, I do share his love for the film room and feeling that this is one of the greatest days in the sports calendar year.
Follow along as I breakdown the entire first round, immediately after each pick takes place.
2011 NFL Draft Grades: Green Bay Packers Select Derek Sherrod No. 32 Overall
Draft Grade: B
The Packers want to protect Aaron Rodgers, and give him the time necessary to dissect defenses to shreds. It won them the 2011 NFL Super Bowl Championship. They believe it'll continue by adding another gifted offensive lineman and pass protector in Sherrod.
That wraps up coverage of the first round, with plenty of surprises to come Friday.
2011 NFL Draft Grades: Pittsburgh Steelers Select Cameron Heyward No. 31 Overall
Draft Grade: B+
Yet another weapon in Pittsburgh's dirty defensive disposal, he'll be another weapon to rotate in and stifle opponents.
A dominant player on the inside and outside at the collegiate level, he'll offer good size as an outside defensive end in the NFL. Stout against the run, can help disrupt as a pass rusher as well.
Given Pittsburgh's ability to develop defensive talent, it's a safe assessment to say that he'll wind up exceeding expectations in the AFC North.
2011 NFL Draft Grades: New York Jets Select Muhammad Wilkerson No. 30 Overall
Draft Grade: A-
Tremendous potential, a physical specimen at 320 pounds but little body fat. Let Rex Ryan coach this guy up, and watch out.
Once he develops, he'll be a player in this system, and another piece to the puzzle as the Jets continue to stay in the top group of the AFC East.
2011 NFL Draft Grades: Chicago Bears Select Gabe Carimi No. 29 Overall
Draft Grade: A
Dude looks like a Bears player. I liked his tape until I saw his douchey posing to start his highlight package.
Now I'm even more convinced he'll have a solid career for the Bears. Maybe him and Jay Cutler can go shopping together.
He plays mean, he'll play past the whistle, and he'll love to play in the cold winds of Chicago after dealing with a career in Wisconsin.
2011 NFL Draft Grades: New Orleans Saints Select Mark Ingram No. 28 Overall
Draft Grade: A
The Saints gave up their 2012 first-rounder to Darth Vader and the Patriots for this selection. The Saints have been pulling guys like Chris Ivory and Pierre Thomas out of black holes and making them into productive NFL running backs.
How about a Heisman Trophy winner, and sure-fire first-round talent? I think he'll do OK.
Ingram can run you over, and make you miss, and he'll run between the tackles for some hard yards to make Drew Brees a happy camper.
LSU fans in the New Orleans area are well familiar with Ingram's talents, and they'll be happy to have him on their side in 2011.
2011 NFL Draft Grades: Baltimore Ravens Select Jimmy Smith No. 27 Overall
Draft Grade: A-
Smith won the award for weirdest reaction to being drafted, as he was sitting stoic while everyone else knew he was being selected. Nice camera work, ESPN.
Anyhow, Smith is an electric athlete who brings a ton of swagger and ability to the corner position. As long as he keeps his head on straight, he'll excel in the talented Ravens defensive unit.
Personally, I love me some swagger at the cornerback position. I'll talk a guy who talks big and backs it up, over a "good guy" any day of the week. My boy Cliff Harris cares about picking off passes, returning punts for touchdowns and looking good doing it. Being seen as a hard worker and good character guy matters, but corners and receivers need a little more cockiness than some of the other spots.
2011 NFL Draft Grades: Kansas City Chiefs Select Jonathan Baldwin No. 26 Overall
Draft Grade: B
The Baltimore Ravens caused office chaos, skipping their current pick to draft at No. 27. There is a lot of noise in the B/R office and nobody knows what just happened.
Now, at pick no. 26, the Chiefs took a huge target in Baldwin, who is 6-foot-4, and that much bigger with a ridiculous 42-inch vertical. Imagine a taller Shannon Brown hauling down jump balls.
He'll take some much-needed pressure off of Dwayne Bowe, and help make life easier for Matt Cassel and Jamaal Charles. The Chiefs continue to improve.
2011 NFL Draft Grades: Seattle Seahawks Select James Carpenter No. 25 Overall
Draft Grade: C
After coach Pete Carroll tweeted all afternoon songs like Prince's "Little Red Corvette" along with Simply Red's "If You Don't Know Me by Now," Carroll drafted a guy who played for the deep red of the University of Alabama.
Carpenter was seen as a bit of a reach as an offensive guard this early, but he does offer upside. A junior college transfer, he still has some development ahead.
Will team with Russell Okung to form the core of a nice young line for the Seahawks to win some battles in the trenches of the wide-open NFC West.
2011 NFL Draft Grades: New Orleans Saints Select Cameron Jordan No. 24 Overall
Draft Grade: B+
Jordan was projected as high as No. 9, and he's still improving. Will help a defense that was exploited at times last year. One of the more athletic defensive ends in this draft, and hasn't reached his potential to date.
Raw in technique, but physically imposing. If he puts it all together and learns how to effectively use his hands, along with a couple more moves to take on offensive linemen with, he'll be a difference maker in the NFL.
Caused havoc against the Ducks when I saw him in person last year, he put our speedy running back and quarterback in their place, which bodes well for the speed and athleticism he'll be facing next year.
2011 NFL Draft Grades: Philadelphia Eagles Select Danny Watkins No. 23 Overall
Draft Grade: C-
Questionable selection with Gabe Carimi still on the board, this pick looks a bit iffy. The Baylor product doesn't offer the upside of some others at the position as he's already 26-years-old.
He offers toughness and some tenacity as the top offensive guard prospect in this draft. Will definitely help open up some holes for LeSean McCoy.
Not a bad fit in the short term, but not a ton of development left in him.
2011 NFL Draft Grades: Indianapolis Colts Select Anthony Castanzo No. 22 Overall
Draft Grade: A-
Castanzo set a Boston College record for the most total career starts at 54, is experienced and savvy as a pass blocker. His run blocking isn't exceptional, but playing for the Colts and Peyton Manning, pass protection is placed at a premium.
Will fit right in, and be able to contribute in his rookie season. Potential to land at either tackle spot, and as well-regarded as any offensive lineman in this draft.
2011 NFL Draft Grades: Cleveland Browns Select Phil Taylor No. 21 Overall
Draft Grade: B-
Load of a nose tackle at 338 pounds, will be a monster against the run. Can't be moved backwards. His job will be to throw lineman into the backfield, and let linebackers come in to clean up the mess.
After releasing Shaun Rogers, the Browns needed some beef in the middle. What's crazy is to think about how slimmed down Taylor is these days, as he showed up to Baylor weighing 385 pounds.
2011 NFL Draft Grades: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Select Adrian Clayborn No. 20
Draft Grade: A-
Clayborn is yet another talented defensive end in this draft taken from the Big Ten Conference. The major component behind an Iowa defense that has played its heart out for Coach Kirk Ferentz the past couple of seasons.
A threat in both the run and pass games, he is a complete prospect, and will improve with the coaching of Raheem Morris. Really impressive film, and a known name coming out of the college ranks.
Also given one of the longer embraces from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, bonus points.
2011 NFL Draft Grades: New York Giants Select Prince Amukamara No. 19 Overall
Draft Grade: A
Amukamara will be a standout corner at the NFL level. Didn't pick any passes as a senior, but that's mainly because his reputation had grown to the point where teams avoided throwing at his side of the field.
A top-10 talent who fell to 19 because other teams had bigger needs elsewhere, nothing else. Safety size, great speed, but needs to become more physical and tighten up his technique a bit at the NFL level.
Will team with Aaron Ross and several other high draft picks in the Giants secondary over the past few years to solidify a unit that deals with the likes of Michael Vick and Tony Romo on a regular basis.
2011 NFL Draft Grades: San Diego Chargers Select Corey Liuget No. 18
Draft Grade: B+
Liuget wins the best bling award so far for that watch taking up half of his wrist he walked toward the podium with. Good man.
Talented defensive tackle prospect who will contribute to help shore up the trenches for the Chargers. Will make Luis Castillo's life a little easier, and hopefully give Philip Rivers and Co. some more time to be on the field.
