NFL Draft 2011 Results: Loser -- TV Viewers and Suspense
The 2011 NFL Draft is in its 76th year. I'm in my 46th. I remember the days when it wasn't televised and I'd be scouring the newspaper the next morning, struggling to read the agate (tiny type) to see which team took which player.
So when ESPN decided many years ago that there was a market to televise the draft, I was ecstatic. But as times have progressed, I have to say I miss the suspense factor. Now you've got TV cameras in the Green Room showing players on the phone, crying, hugging their parents, buddy-hugging fellow players ... well, gee, we sure know who the next pick is, don't we?
Don't get me wrong -- showing Texas A&M's Von Miller crying as he got the call is powerful TV and shows the raw emotion that goes with the draft. But, you know, it's sort of like calling the election at 8 o'clock at night after the polls close.
