2011 NFL Mock Draft: Todd McShay Says New Orleans Saints Will Pick Corey Liuget
Todd McShay's 2011 NFL Mock Draft Has the Saints Upgrading Their Front Seven
The New Orleans Saints were very good defending the pass in 2010, but they had their issues against the rush (see Lynch, Marshawn). This had a lot to do with some weaknesses in their front seven, which is where the Saints will be focused when they're on the clock with the No. 24 pick on Thursday night.
ESPN's Todd McShay thinks the Saints would do well to draft a defensive end, but his 2011 NFL Mock Draft (can only be accessed with ESPN Insider) suggests that they won't pass up Illinois defensive tackle Corey Liuget if he falls to them.
As McShay sees it, Liuget would represent a true value pick:
Defensive end is a bigger need but at this point a top-15 talent like Liuget is hard to turn down.
Liuget is the kind of guy that is very difficult to block. He stays low, and he uses his formidable strength to get around blockers. He also has great closing speed, making him a valuable asset in rush defense.
That last part should have the Saints brass salivating. I will be very surprised if Liuget falls to No. 24, but I don't think the Saints will pass him up if he does.
My Pick: Brooks Reed
I have Liuget going to the Rams and Akeem Ayers going to the Chiefs. If that pans out (and it won't), the Saints will go for Reed.
