2011 NFL Mock Draft: Todd McShay Thinks Kansas City Chiefs Will Take Brooks Reed
Todd McShay's 2011 NFL Mock Draft Has the Chiefs Reaching for Reed
Fear the Kansas City Chiefs. They went 10-6 and won the AFC West in 2010, and they still have a lot of improvements to make. They dominated the draft last year, and I wouldn't put it past them to do so again this year.
The Chiefs don't have many glaring needs, but one thing they could use is an outside linebacker to pair up with Tamba Hali. Todd McShay has them finding one in the person of Arizona's Brooks Reed, as he has them taking Reed with the No. 21 pick in his latest 2011 NFL Mock Draft (can only be accessed with ESPN Insider).
McShay acknowledges that No. 21 is a bit of a reach for Reed, but he thinks it's a good fit nonetheless:
This might seem a bit high for Reed, but he makes sense as a pass-rusher to complement Tamba Hali, and with his motor, character and experience on both edges, Reed fits what GM Scott Pioli is looking for.
Reed is not without his faults, but it's hard not to compare him to Clay Matthews. And yes, it's more than just the hair. Like Matthews, Reed has an insane motor, and you just get the sense that nothing satisfies him more than getting after the quarterback.
The tricky part is that Reed doesn't quite have the same kind of numbers backing him up as some of the other pass rushers in this year's draft. He had just 6.5 sacks in 2010, which means that there is some bust potential here.
My Pick: Akeem Ayers
I like Reed, but I think Ayers would be the safer pick.
