Jay Cutler took a lot of flak when he took himself out of last season's NFC Championship game against the eventual Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers.
Despite all the criticism, however, one lady stuck by his side: his girlfriend Kristin Cavallari.
Now Jay Cutler is returning the favor by doing the honorable thing. Cutler reportedly whisked her away to Cabo and proposed to her, and the couple is now engaged.
Since we're going to be hearing a lot more about the polarizing quarterback and his soon-to-be wife, let's take a closer look at the future Mrs. Cutler.
Kristin Cavallari is best known for her roles on the MTV "reality" shows Laguna Beach and The Hills.
After spending most of her life in the comfortable oasis of Southern California, it looks like she'll be packing up and heading into some cold winters in Chicago...that is, if the NFL season actually begins.
The good news for Kristin is that at least she knows that Cutler and the Bears won't ever be playing into February.
Some of you might be asking, who is Kristin Cavallari and what does she do?
Well the good folks over at Wikipedia have provided us with one of the best answers in Wikipedia history. Under occupation it lists Kristin as "actress, reality star, socialite."
Only in the 21st century can someone be famous for being a "socialite." The first sentence of her entry takes it a bit further by adding the descriptor, "celebutante."
The best part is, Spell Check says "celebutante" is a word. I love this country.
Jay Cutler is one of the most polarizing figures in the NFL. While some consider him to be on the cusp of being one of the best QB's in the league, some think that his poor work ethic and attitude will ultimately prevent him from being anything but mediocre.
After leading the Bears to the NFC Championship game, Cutler famously left the game after suffering a knee injury at the end of the first half.
Immediately, there was outrage from Chicago fans and tough guys in general that Cutler should have played through the pain, but instead he tapped out and the Bears lost the game.
With that in mind it's got to be a positive step that Cutler is committing himself to Kristin Cavallari. Hopefully he doesn't hurt himself dancing at the reception and have to excuse himself from all wedding-night activity.
We've come to expect extravagant engagement rings from celebrities, but this one is just out of control.
The engagement ring that Cutler gave Cavallari is reportedly 5.2 carats. Depending on the four C's, that ring could cost upwards of half a million dollars.
How can you get mad at your husband when you're wearing the gross national product of a small country on your finger?
Before dating Cutler, Cavallari was linked to former USC quarterback Matt Leinart. When they started dating, Leinart was still a sure bet to be a great NFL quarterback.
After a couple of years it became apparent that Leinart was destined to be a backup, so Cavallari set her sights on Cutler.
At this rate, she'll be stealing Tom Brady from Gisele in no time.
Lots of actresses have made the successful leap from reality television to movies. Ok, well, I can't think of any right now, but I'm sure it's happened.
Cavallari is attempting to do just that with roles in such monster hits as Fingerprints, Green Flash, Wild Cherry and Spring Breakdown (in which she played the pivotal role of "Seven #3").
Check out the trailer for Green Flash (aka Beach Kings), which somehow got bypassed by theaters and went straight to DVD.
Kristin isn't the only The Hills star to get engaged. Notorious camera hogs Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt got engaged and married in 2008.
They then filed for divorce in 2010, but the couple later admitted that the divorce was just a publicity stunt to help Montag's career, and that they had in fact renewed their wedding vows.
I know it's a lot to live up to, but maybe Kristin and Jay can duplicate the roller coaster romance of the former reality stars.
Kristin might have to get going on the plastic surgery though.
Jay Cutler was once considered the quarterback of the future for the Denver Broncos, but lack of production and trade demands ended his reign in the Mile High City.
They traded him to the Bears in 2009 for Kyle Orton, and Cutler's legend was born. He's been good for the Bears but not great, and the question remains whether he will ever fulfill his potential.
After co-starring with Lauren Conrad on Laguna Beach, Kristin took a break from reality television while Lauren became one of the most recognizable faces in the country on her spin-off, The Hills.
When Lauren announced that she was leaving The Hills, Kristin was right there to step in as the main character of the show.
Those reality stars always figure out a way to stay in the spotlight.
While the track record isn't great for reality star-athlete relationships, we certainly wish Kristin and Jay the best of luck.
Let's hope they turn out more like Khloe and Lamar than Kim and Reggie. Although both of them did win titles.
Hey, maybe Jay Cutler's smarter than we thought.
