WWE Draft 2011: How the WWE Could Learn from Other Leagues
The 2011 WWE Draft will occur on Monday Night Raw (9/8 CT) on the USA Network. It will emanate live from the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C.
The WWE has held drafts almost annually since the brand extension was announced in 2002.
In the following slides, I discuss features I would like to see adapted for Monday's show.
Let Vince Be Vince! (Chairman Presents Draftees)
McMahon draws heat unlike any other superstar
David Stern is the face of the NBA Draft. Roger Goodell is the face of the NFL Draft. Vince McMahon should be the night's emcee.
Past fans may rekindle interest if they see Vinny Mac on the screen selling the importance of the brand extension.
Use the Ticker!
It is no secret that fans may surf channels during an episode. They are more likely to continue viewing if they can get caught up easily.
Use the ticker to announce the draft order and previous picks. The WWE could also use the ticker to announce...
WWE Hall of Fame member Gene Okerlund
Send the superstars in the back to get interviewed by "Mean" Gene Okerlund. If the WWE Draft is one of the biggest episodes each year, it should be treated as such.
The viewers should learn of the reactions of the announcers and the superstars. Let new storylines begin on Monday's show.
If Daniel Bryan is going to the blue brand, let him announce his intention to pursue the World Heavyweight Championship (if the title is still on the show). Imagine the possibilities.
WWE Ticker: Sheamus drafted to Smackdown. Long declares 4/29 show will feature Sheamus/Kane match.
