UFC 129 Predictions: Jake Shields Over Georges St-Pierre for Welterweight Title
I'll be the first to admit it—I'm not unbiased when it comes to Jake Shields.
He fights out of San Francisco so our paths have crossed on several occasions and he seems like a modest, humble dude. But a supremely dangerous one, especially if you make the mistake of going to the ground with him (I realize all of the same can be said of GSP).
Ask "Dangerous" Dan Henderson how easy it is to escape Shields' fly-paper-like grasp once you're on the canvas. You can also throw the question at Martin "The Hitman" Kampmann, although I do believe Kampmann has picked GSP in the title bout.
It is true that Jake on his feet is not always a pretty sight, but he's survived the onslaught of strikers like Yushin "Thunder" Okami, Carlos Condit, Paul "Semtex" Daley, "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler and Dangerous Dan. If you're grading on pure striking, you could make a persuasive argument that all of the above are more lethal strikers than Rush.
Of course, not a single one is anywhere close to St-Pierre when it comes to the other facets of mixed martial arts (with the possible exception of Condit), either. As mentioned, however, going to the ground plays right to Shields' strength.
I'm not necessarily expecting a crowd pleaser, but I do expect the margin of victory to be razor-thin or a late-round submission.
And I think Jake Shields comes out ahead in either instance.
