Good afternoon, NHL fans!
I know it's very early for a hockey game, but we have an exciting afternoon ahead of us as the Pittsburgh Penguins host the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
Pittsburgh is currently leading the series three games to one and can eliminate Tampa Bay with a win at Consol Energy Center today.
Meanwhile, the Lightning will be looking to hold off elimination and bring Game 6 back to Tampa.
Whether you are a Penguins fan, a Bolts fan or a fan of another team checking out the game, please feel free to join me for the latest discussion and analysis of the game.
Puck drop is at 12 noon.
Final thoughts:
Pittsburgh has to figure out what is ailing their power play. It finished 25th in the regular season and has been a problem for several years. Even if they do advance, they will have a hard time against teams with stronger man advantages.
I am confident Fleury will bounce back again. He did so after Tampa's 5-1 win in Game 2, and he wasn't even pulled in that one.
The Penguins seem to have a problem closing out series at home. I'm not sure whether they are not focused or what, but they will not always have the opportunity to win on the road.
Steven Stamkos can finally get the playoff monkey on his back. If he plays like this on Monday, the Penguins will be on the wrong side of a potential miracle comeback.
That is all for me today. Please leave any thoughts in the comments section!
Pittsburgh is wrapping up the game on the power play.
Unfortunately, Tampa managed to clear the puck and this game will end 8-2.
There will be a Game 6 on Monday at the St. Pete Time's Forum in Tampa.
Johnson has been pulled with 46.2 seconds to go, a move that makes no sense at this point.
Kennedy received a pass from Martin but could not push it under Roloson. 1:17 to go in the third.
The Penguins have an abbreviated power play for 42 seconds. We are at the 2:16 mark of the third period.
We are now playing 4-on-4 hockey for another minute. Tampa is penalized as Stamkos takes a roughing minor. Orpik received a 10-minute misconduct.
Bergenheim and Nate Thompson take the assists on Moore's goal.
Letang is now serving a penalty with a little under four minutes to go in the game.
Johnson stops another Lightning scoring chance, and a physical battle breaks out behind the net. Orpik is going to the locker room with 3:34 to go.
Tampa is right back on the power play shortly after Lovejoy's call expired.
Stamkos has regained control of the puck and passes to Gagne, who is shoved down along the boards.
Martin tries to bring the puck into the Penguins' zone, but Tampa picks it back up.
Moore scores at 15:35 to give Tampa their fourth power play goal. It is now 8-2.
Stamkos sets up a pass to St. Louis, but St. Louis sends it right back to his fellow star.
Stamkos takes a big shot but cannot score.
Tampa regains the puck and holds on to it while looking for an open skater. They have been very careful about their passing today.
Talbot has a shorthanded chance and lays a hit on Hedman. He will be going to the box for boarding at 13:46.
St. Louis pushes the puck ahead, but Johnson is able to make a stick save.
Martin gets the puck into the Pens' zone. Kennedy takes a shot, but Roloson comes up with a save of his own.
Gagne goes for the hat trick but is stopped by Johnson once again.
Lovejoy will be serving a slashing penalty with 8:12 remaining in the third.
Tampa is called for icing with 9:48 remaining.
The Penguins are taking shots and getting in front of Roloson, but Tampa is not allowing them to get too close.
Downie goes down at 8:46 after being hit in the mouth with a stick, but just as Moore did before, he is able to get up on his own power.
In this period, the Penguins are outshooting Tampa 5-2. Kovalev got his 100th playoff point with an assist on Rupp's goal.
Conner gets on the board with 11:38 to go. Score is now 7-2 Tampa.
The Bolts are outshooting the Penguins 28-25.
Thankfully, the Penguins save themselves from being shutout.
Rupp scores at 6:26 to cut the score to 7-1.
The fans are now trying to get the team going, but it is too little too late.
As a Pens fan, I can't help but laugh at this point.
It is now 7-0 on yet another Bolts power play. Kubina will be credited with his second goal of the game.
The goal came at 5:45 of the third.
I stand corrected. That is Brent Johnson's penalty; Kennedy is serving it.
Bergenheim hooks Johnson, but it is Kennedy who will sit for roughing at 3:59. Tampa goes back to the power play.
Numerous Pens fans like to use the excuse that the Penguins are not good in afternoon games as a reason for their poor performance.
However, Pittsburgh is 7-2-1 in afternoon games this season.
It shouldn't matter what time the game is; the Penguins should have been ready.
The Penguins crowd is coming back to life with a "LET'S GO PENS" chant.
They aren't going for long before Kubina nets the Bolts' second power play goal. He shot from the bottom of the right faceoff circle and over Johnson's shoulder. The goal came at 2:55 of the third. 6-0 Tampa.
Moore goes down after getting caught with a stick. It may have been on a play from Kovalev's stick.
Moore is able to get up on his own power, but Kovalev will be called for high sticking at 1:29. It will be Tampa's third power play of the game.
Tampa has controlled the puck early in this period. We are lining up for a faceoff with 19:24 to go.
The Penguins have only four blocked shots in this game to Tampa's 17.
Orpik puts a far shot on Roloson with 18:46 to go. The faceoff will be in the Lightning zone.
We are back for the start of the third period.
Maybe it's just me, but is it possible that a Pittsburgh Pirates game will be more entertaining tonight?
The second period comes to an end with Tampa up 5-0. Pittsburgh is still out-shooting Tampa overall 20-18.
However, the Bolts have the edge in faceoff wins, 25-21.
One more period.
The Penguins are in their zone trying to set something up with 36 seconds remaining on the power play.
Letestu looked to have a goal, but the net came off the moorings. A replay shows that the net was coming off as the puck crossed, and there is no argument from the Penguins regarding the call.
Pittsburgh has yet to get on the board with 1:24 to go.
Conner was open but had a hard time receiving the pass.
There will be a penalty on Hedman for interference with 2:58 to go.
It's hardly worth getting excited over at this point, honestly.
