Once a year the NHL has a very special, fun-filled weekend. That weekend is NHL All-Star weekend. The events include the skills competition, the Young Stars game, and of course the All-Star game.
This season, All-Star weekend is being held in Atlanta, Georgia. Thrashers fans are going to be lucky to see stars Marion Hossa and Ilya Kovalchuk play in the All-Star game. They are also lucky to see blooming star rookie Tobias Enstrom in the Young Stars game.
Unfortunately, this year the format of the young stars game has changed. In the past it was a regular game. This year it has transformed into a more pond hockey game. Instead of five on five this game will be played as a three on three. Each team has twelve players and no goalies. Trying to stop these future all-stars from scoring are the goalies from the all-star game which will play in the game the next day. Instead of three 20 minute periods, the game will be played with three 12 minute periods. There will be one faceoff to start off each period then it is nonstop hockey. If the puck goes out of play, a new one is thrown in. If the puck goes in the net, the scoring team skates back to their defensive zone and the scored on team takes the puck up.
The fans in Atlanta will be missing the chance to see these future stars in a real game environment.
