2011 NBA Mock Draft: Charlotte Bobcats Reach for Nolan Smith at No. 19
NBA Mock Draft 2011 Places Nolan Smith on the Charlotte Bobcats With Pick 19
Nolan Smith is more than ready for the NBA after four years of extended playing time for the Duke Blue Devils. The intelligent point guard can make an offense run smoothly with his instincts and smarts.
Johnathan Wassermen of NBAdraft.net writes that Smith enters the NBA being extremely polish for a college player:
With the ball in his hands, Smith's high basketball IQ and excellent ball security allow him to efficiently run an offense ... He shows nice touch in the lane when attacking the rim, with a good feel for when to float it/take it strong and when to dish it out to the open man ... He's a capable outside shooter, but generally shoots his best when someone creates open opportunities for him.
The problem with Smith lies in his lack of explosiveness. When you can't beat your man off the dribble in college...it's not happening in the NBA.
He is going to rely on his intelligence to outsmart opponents.
Good Fit or Bad Fit?
The Bobcats still aren't sure if DJ Augustin is good enough to handle playing 40-plus minutes a game.
Drafting Smith would ease the pressure on Augustin and allow Smith to ease his way into the lineup rather quickly. But this is a bit of a reach for, he will last till the end of the first round if not selected here.
Chances of NBA Success: 40%
The major concern is his ceiling. He maximized all of his abilities in college—does he have anything left for the pros?
