NFL Draft 2011: Is Andy Dalton or Christian Ponder a Better Fit for Bengals?
The Cincinnati Bengals May Be Choosing Between Ponder and Dalton at QB
The Bengals need a quarterback early on in the draft, almost more than any other team in the NFL. Needless to say, they are looking at different quarterbacks throughout the first two rounds of the draft.
Since Cam Newton will most likely be off the board when the Bengals make their selection, they will have to look at second-round options. Ryan Mallett seems to be slipping back in the first round again as teams may want to trade up, which could leave Andy Dalton and Christian Ponder as options.
The Cincinnati Enquirer's Joe Reedy compared both prospects in his blog, and noted that Dalton has the better arm strength while Ponder has more accuracy. They were mostly declared as even prospects, though Dalton does not have the injury history Ponder does.
In terms of a fit, I agree with what seems to be the consensus and find Dalton to be a better fit than Ponder. Both are solid options, but you cannot afford to have a quarterback whose throws "sail" in the AFC North, as they will be picked off.
Based on that alone, if those are the two quarterbacks left as options for Cincinnati, then Dalton has to be the selection.
