NFL Free Agency 2011: Santonio Holmes Headed to the Washington Redskins?
If I could use one word to describe Santonio Holmes, it would be a game-changer (it’s hyphenated, cut me some slack). The guy just has a knack for making the big play when his team absolutely needs it.
After missing the first 4 games on the 2010 season (thanks to a drug suspension), Santonio racked up 746 yard and 6 touchdowns in 12 games with the Jets. He was solid in the postseason too, scoring a TD in the divisional round against the Patriots, and another against the Steelers in the AFC Championship Game.
Holmes has made it perfectly clear that he would love to stay in New York, but he has his demands. From NBC Sports:
Free agent Santonio Holmes told ESPN New York's Rich Cimini on Saturday that he won't sign his restricted free agent tender if the 2010 work rules remain in place.
The Jets placed a first- and third-round restricted free agent tender on Holmes last month, but he says he is only interested in inking a long-term contract, and that he will sign with whomever offers him the best deal if he hits the open market as an unrestricted free agent. Like Vincent Jackson last year, Holmes appears ready to holdout if the Jets play hardball and attempt to force him to sign his tender.
New York wants to keep him, but the price is high, especially considering all of the free agents the Jets have this offseason (Braylon Edwards, David Harris, Antonio Cromartie, Brad Smith, Shaun Ellis, and more).
The Washington Redskins have plenty of cash to spend, and a huge need for WRs. While New York is likely the best fit for Holmes, I have a feeling Redskins' owner Daniel Snyder is going to blow the Jets' offer out of the water.
Prediction: Santonio Holmes signs with the Washington Redskins
