NFL Free Agency 2011: DeAngelo Williams to the Miami Dolphins?
In 2008, DeAngelo Williams ran all over the NFL to the tune of 1,515 yards, 18 touchdowns, and a monstrous 5.5 yards per carry. 2009 was another stellar season for Williams: he racked up 1,117 yards and 7 touchdowns, his role slightly reduced thanks to a stellar sophomore season from Panthers’ RB Jonathan Stewart.
2010, however, didn’t exactly go well for DeAngelo. After playing in just 6 games last season, he was placed on the injured reserve with a badly sprained foot, ending his season, and possibly his career in Carolina.
I’m sure Carolina would love to hang on to Williams, but he may not be their top priority this offseason. The Panthers are a team with a new coach, a shaky QB, and very little production at WR and TE.
Carolina is implementing a new system under new head coach Ron Rivera. Not to mention Jonathan Stewart, along with late-season surprise Mike Goodson, are more than capable of handling the load at RB.
The Panthers certainly are in the mix for Williams, but they may not be willing to spend the money on a position they’re already in pretty good shape at.
The Denver Broncos will likely make a run at Williams. Their new head coach John Fox was DeAngelo’s head coach for 5 seasons in Carolina.
But let’s not count out the Dolphins. Ronnie Brown is a free agent, as is Ricky Williams. A fresh start at RB looks like a great idea for Miami, and Williams is the perfect fit.
Prediction: DeAngelo Williams signs with the Miami Dolphins.
