Kim Kardashian and Other Sexy Good Luck Charms in Sports
The Kardashian Effect is well documented by now. The theory is that when you date a Kardashian, you win a championship. The evidence speaks for itself:
Lamar Odom marries Khloe Kardashian—NBA champion.
Reggie Bush dates Kim Kardashian—Super Bowl champion.
Scott Disick dates Kourtney Kardashian—Ascot-tying champion.
As an athlete, there's nothing better than dating a sexy woman—unless that sexy woman also helps you win a championship.
Here's a look at the sexiest good luck charms in sports.
20. Jordan Fish (Denny Hamlin)
Hamlin entered the 2010 season with great expectations of this being his best year ever.
He fulfilled that promise by setting a career high with his fifth win of the season.
I think his girlfriend, Charlotte Bobcats cheerleader Jordan Fish, was in the car with him. Actually, it would be pretty hard to keep your eyes on the road with her in the car.
19. Monica (Shannon Brown)
Shannon Brown came to the Lakers as a throw-in in the Adam Morrison-Vladimir Radmanovic deal. While nobody can confirm Morrison's whereabouts these days, Brown went on to become an integral part of the Lakers' back-to-back championships.
Brown took his game to the next level this year, averaging career highs across the board. Is it just a coincidence that he's improved greatly since he started dating Monica towards the end of last season?
I think not.
18. Lindsay Clubine (Clay Bucholz)
Clay Bucholz made headlines in 2007 for throwing a no-hitter in just his second Major League start. Unfortunately, it got kind of rocky after that.
In the 2008 and 2009 seasons, Bucholz went a combined 9-13 with an ERA over five.
Bucholz miraculously bounced back in 2010, going 17-7 with a 2.33 ERA and finished sixth in the AL Cy Young Award voting.
Clay got engaged to Linsay Clubine in 2010.
17. Gu Chen (Sun Yue)
How can Sun Yue's girlfriend Gu Chen be a good luck charm if Sun hardly ever played and is now out of the NBA?
Let me answer your question with a question. How many NBA championships did Sun Yue win while he was dating Chen?
I rest my case.
16. Chelsea Cooley (Joe Mauer)
Joe Mauer is one of the best hitting catchers of all time; he has already won two batting titles at the age of 27.
Part of his success has to do with dating Miss USA 2005, Chelsea Cooley. The two dated in 2006—the same year that Mauer hit .347 and won his first batting title.
15. Sylvia Lopez Castro (Pau Gasol)
Since being traded to the Lakers, Pau Gasol has gone from being a solid NBA player to one of the best in the game.
He's also won back-to-back NBA championships and is looking for a third this year. He clearly has Sylvia Lopez Castro to thank for his good fortune.
14. Paris Hilton (Barry Zito)
Despite being an overpaid, underachieving, mediocre pitcher since he joined the Giants, Barry Zito did help the team win the World Series last season.
Part of the reason was Paris Hilton, who Barry was rumored to have dated. He just needed to shed the curse of Alyssa Milano to regain his form.
13. Katrina Campins (Jeremy Shockey)
We all know that Reggie Bush was dating Kim K. when the Saints won the Super Bowl in 2010. But let us not forget that Jeremy Shockey was dating former star of The Apprentice, Katrina Campins.
Why should Kim get all the credit?
12. Maria Sharapova (Sasha Vujacic)
There's no good reason that former Laker Sasha Vujacic should have two rings. The only reason we can think of is that he was dating and is now engaged to Maria Sharapova.
Sharapova has been ranked No. 1 in the world and has three Grand Slams under her belt, so maybe it's rubbing off on Sasha.
11. Susana Werner (Julio Cesar)
Julio Cesar is a Brazilian goalie who plays for Inter Milan. He is known for marrying one of the hottest women in the world, Susana Werner.
Not only is Werner beautiful, she's also apparently a good luck charm. Her husband and Inter Milan won the Champions League in 2010.
10. Bridgette Wilson (Pete Sampras)
Pete Sampras dominated tennis for the entire decade of the 90s, but late in his career, he was on the way out.
Still, he managed to hang on for a few more titles thanks to his wife and good luck charm, former Miss Teen USA and star of Saved By the Bell, Bridgette Wilson.
9. Minka Kelly (Derek Jeter)
After winning four championships in five seasons from 1996-2000, Derek Jeter and the Yankees went into a serious slump.
The Yankees finally broke out of their slump in 2009, thanks in part to the fact that Derek Jeter had finally settled down with Friday Night Lights star Minka Kelly.
The two are engaged, so the Yankees may be ready to go on another run.
8. Eva Longoria (Tony Parker)
Parker has won three championships, and he was with Eva Longoria for two of them. Parker has enjoyed some of the best seasons of his career with Longoria, and it remains to be seen whether he can win a championship without her.
Maybe Longoria will start dating someone on the Lakers to add insult to injury when the Spurs are eliminated in the Western Conference Finals.
7. Dominique Piek (CJ Wilson)
The Rangers took a chance when they decided to convert their closer, CJ Wilson, into a starting pitcher before the 2010 season.
Not only did Wilson flourish, he ended up being a strong starter that led the Rangers all the way to the World Series.
No coincidence that he started dating swimsuit model Dominique Piek that same season.
6. Kate Hudson (Alex Rodgriguez)
Since coming to the Yankees in 2004, A-Rod had developed a reputation for shrinking during clutch moments.
He stood in stark contract to "Mr. November" Derek Jeter, who draws nothing but praise from Yankee fans.
That all changed, however, in 2009 when A-Rod cleaned up in the playoffs and helped lead the Yankees to the World Series.
Who was cheering for him in the stands? None other than Kate Hudson.
A-Rod has since moved on to Cameron Diaz, but I'm not sure if she has the same magic touch.
5. Sara Carbonero (Iker Casillas)
Iker Casillas, the goalie for the Spanish national team, has built up quite the reputation as a ladies man. He bounced from model to actress, back to model until finally settling down with sports reporter Sara Carbonero before the 2010 World Cup.
Spain had never won the tournament, but I think we all know what happened that summer.
4. Michelle Damon (Johnny Damon)
Everyone knows that the curse of the Bambino kept the Red Sox from winning the World Series from 1918-2004.
What happened in 2004 to change everything? Johnny Damon married his wife Michelle, and the Sox won the series that same year.
If the Rays win their first World Series this year, we'll know there's only one reason why.
3. Kim Kardashian (Reggie Bush)
Reggie Bush may be a disappointment to those who expected him to be an NFL great, but he did help the Saints win a championship in 2010.
That's largely due to Kim and the Kardashian Effect, which allowed Reggie to do just enough to help the Saints win the title.
Drew Brees has his birthmark. Reggie had Kim.
2. Jessica Szohr (Aaron Rodgers)
From his relationship with Julie Henderson, we know Aaron Rodgers has a thing for models. It apparently extends to actresses as well.
While Henderson couldn't push Rodgers over the top, a reported relationship with Jessica Szohr surfaced just as he and the Packers were making their championship run.
A Super Bowl MVP and a hot actress on his arm? That's worthy of the championship belt.
1. Khloe Kardashian (Lamar Odom)
Lamar Odom has always been tagged as an underachiever—a guy who has tons of potential but just doesn't have the desire.
That all changed when he started dating and suddenly married Khloe, who transformed Lamar into a consistent, veteran presence on the world champion Lakers.
Since the marriage, Lamar has played some of the best basketball of his career, and he's usually considered to be the "X-factor" that determines whether the Lakers win or not.
