UFC 129 Aftermath: Why Anderson Silva vs. Jake Shields Is Uniquely Interesting

After Jake Shields disposes of Georges St-Pierre…oops! Sorry, I’m just being provocative.
Let me rephrase my opening sentence:
Win or lose in his quest for St-Pierre’s UFC Welterweight Championship belt this coming April 30 at the Rogers Center in Toronto, Ontario, Shields will present an interesting challenge against Anderson Silva in a possible future fight.
And for the sake of us all, that match-up should happen AFTER St-Pierre and Silva consummate their Dream Fight. (Also, this Dream Fight should be held whether St-Pierre retains his title or not in UFC 129. After all, another loss for St-Pierre—which would be only his third—can always be considered a fluke.)
Silva versus Shields will be a showcase featuring the arguable pound-for-pound king against the preeminent ground-and-ground exemplar. Yes, I really mean “ground-and-ground” and not “ground-and-pound.”
Two great fighters with glaring holes in their games that hardly affect their chances of winning.
“Hardly,” and not “absolutely don’t.”
Silva’s wrestling deficiency definitely gave Travis Lutter and Dan Henderson their bright moments in their futile resistance against the UFC Middleweight King.

And we all know about the epic struggle against Chael Sonnen.
As for Shields’s Achilles heel in the striking department, let’s just say that he could’ve won over Henderson with less difficulty and beat Martin Kampmann more convincingly, if not for this shortcoming.
So we’ll end up with great-striking-and-great-submission-grappling versus great-wrestling-and-great-submission-grappling.
But don’t be surprised if, come fight night, Silva knocks out Shields with a powerful slam, reminiscent of Tito Ortiz putting Evan Tanner to sleep in UFC 30.
Or if Shields finishes Silva with a flying spinning back kick.
To paraphrase war veteran Forrest Gump, “MMA’s like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”
