Baseball is the most popular sport for conspiracy theorists. So here's one of mine:
(Note: The following theory is just that. There is no concrete evidence to point to its existence.)

Alex Rodriguez is one of the best known players in all of baseball. He's on the top team, has seemingly endless amounts of talent, and is arguably THE best player in the game.
He’s also easily one of the greatest hitters in the Steroid Era. So, why haven't we heard anything connecting the star to steroids? Maybe it's because baseball doesn't want us to.
Baseball is currently held in pretty low esteem compared to the other sports. Even the cricket fans are making fun of us...
The most prestigious record in baseball is held by its largest villain, and it seems that the greatest offensive player (Barry Bonds) and the greatest pitcher (Roger Clemens) of the Steroid Era were users of the era's namesake.
So...what baseball obviously needs is a hero to lead us into the new era.
We need someone to break the home run record without controversy, someone who is highly respected by all. That someone happens to be Alex Rodriguez.
José Canseco has implicated Rodriguez numerous times...and Canseco has been right about everyone else so far, so why not A-Rod?
If baseball wanted Rodriguez to succeed badly enough, they could warn him of upcoming steroid tests, "lose" incriminating data, etc...just do whatever they need to keep A-Rod's name clean.
A-Rod will never be caught. But is it because he's clean, or for darker reasons?

Good stuff! I know you said "jest" but you never know... it wouldn't shock me if something like this is true... because as we've seen, Canseco has been right about lots of things.

Yeah... The more I think about it, the more it makes sense... After problems earlier, baseball juiced up the ball and changed everything to fit the play of Babe Ruth... so... you never know...

im a yanks fan and support arod..i dont believe he has done anything as he was amazing when he came up as an 18 year old..he was still jacking HRs everywhere ...however this is an interesting article and its always fun to hear of a conspiracy theory. I know u never said its true, but i really dont think this one will ever be true..and not for the DARK reasons you suggest.
