Adam Scott Finishes Two Strokes Behind Charl Schwartzel
Adam Scott has never won a major tournament. He came close once, as he finished tied for third at the 2006 PGA Championship, but there was certainly nothing in his resume that suggested he was going to be in the running for the Green Jacket at the 2011 Masters.
Clearly, we should have known better. Scott was all even five holes into Sunday's final round at Augusta National, but he then birdied five of the last 13 holes to climb to the top of the leaderboard. He ended up with a five-under 67 on Sunday, running his score for the tournament at 12-under.
Alas, it ultimately turned out that Scott wasn't quite good enough to top Charl Schwartzel, who birded each of the final four holes to finish with a round-best six-under 66. He finished at 14-under, topping both Scott and Jason Day by two strokes. He will now take home his very first Green Jacket, not to mention his first victory in a major tournament.
Nevertheless, I'm quite sure Scott will settle for second place. It is, after all, the highest he's ever finished in a major tournament.
For most of the day on Sunday, the big storyline was the sudden surge of Tiger Woods, who ended up finishing tied for fourth at 10-under. But the other big one was whether or not this was going to be the first year that an Australian would win the Masters. Both Scott and Day were in the running to do so, and it's a good bet that every last soul in Australia was watching.
Both Scott and Day came up just short this year, but you can rest assured that this won't be the last we see of them.
