Masters 2011 Leaderboard Day 2 Sees Early-Round Charges From Yang, Barnes
The second round of the 2011 Masters Tournament may be less than three hours old, but we’ve already seen a pair of players preparing to take a stab at leaders Rory McIlroy and Alvaro Quiros.
30-year-old Korean Y.E. Yang, who was tied with McIlroy at seven under at one point late in his round yesterday, has birdied three of his first four holes to join McIlroy and Alvaros atop the leaderboard. It looked like the Korean would get off to a slow start after dropping a bogey on the opening hole, but he’s torn off three straight birdies on the second, third and fourth holes to re-tie the leaders through six holes.
Ricky Barnes, the 30-year-old Englishman is also charging up the leaderboard, moving into a tie for the lead after posting three birdies in his first six holes to move to seven-under for the tournament.
Yang has found success in major tournaments before, beating Tiger Woods to win the 2008 PGAChampionship, but his maddeningly inconsistent round on Thursday leaves me wondering whether we’re in for another roller coaster ride with him today. Yang sat tied with McIlroy atop the leaderboard through 16 holes, but bogeyed both 17 and 18 to fall two back heading into today’s round.
Luke Donald has also made a charge up the leaderboard, hitting birdie on three of his first five holes to move to three under on the day. He's currently four strokes back of the leaders, while Fred Couples has birdied two of his first five to move to three-under par as well.
While McIlroy, Quiros and Yang appear to hold a lead, the early scores today indicate that perhaps, we're going to see some major changes on the leaderboard today. It's looking like Friday's early conditions are conducive to low scores, and things are getting quite crowded near the top.
