Preseason College Football Rankings 2011: Where Should Buckeyes Rank in AP Poll?
The Associated Press preseason poll will be released this weekend, and many are wondering where the Ohio State Buckeyes should rank.
The USA Today Coaches preseason poll has already been released, and the Buckeyes were voted in at No. 16. Will the college football writers feel the same way?
It's tough to say because there are a good number of questions surrounding Ohio State on the field as well as off. The possible sanctions the Buckeyes might face shouldn't affect their ranking, but since they have yet to name a starting quarterback it could hinder where they land.
The eventual starter must find a way to win in the first five games without his two best assets. Dan Herron and DeVier Posey are suspended for the first give games, and replacing their offensive productivity will be tough.
It's no secret this team isn't as strong as a year ago because they are without Terrelle Pryor. He quit the team amid the scandal, and now it's up to interim head coach Luke Fickell to decide if veteran Joe Bauserman or true freshman Braxton Miller will be the starter.
Fickell told reporters that the majority of starting positions are open, and the quarterbacks continue to fight for the job. He'll use the scrimmages as measuring points on who should be the starter. Per ESPN:
Every day is a critical moment for those guys; just showing their poise, showing their leadership and showing their competitive nature. But it isn't every day you're completely live, he said. You don't go as much live as you used to, probably. A jersey scrimmage is when you go live.
Bauserman is the safe bet, which means he is more likely to be the starter. However, Miller might thrive more with his dual threat ability. Luckily for Miller, he enrolled early and has been steadily improving. It won't be long before he sees the field of play for the Buckeyes.
In the end, the Buckeyes should be in the late teens of the first preseason AP poll. They still have a strong defense to bank on, and once their suspended players return they will be one of the top teams in the Big Ten.
