UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid & Tottenham: Key Matchups & Prediction
There is an excellent article by BR's own James Willis on the key matchups tonight, which you can read here.
It's definitely something worth considering, given the strength of the two squads, but I think the individual performances of some of the players are what could be the difference tonight.
Both teams have great goalkeepers in Casillas and Gomes, and of course most people would give the edge to Casillas. But Gomes isn't someone to shrink in the big occasion, and if he has a big game tonight, Real Madrid could be very limited in their scoring capacity.
Speaking of which, it's difficult not to say that a team with the likes of Ronaldo, Kaka, Benzema, Ozil, Adebayor and Di Maria will have any problems scoring against a Tottenham defence that might not be as translucent as it has been in the past, but is still not water tight. Of the top five teams in the league, they are the only ones to have conceded more goals away from home than they have scored. Sandro and Tottenham's two centre backs need to have a big game tonight.
The big news for Tottenham is obviously the fitness of Gareth Bale. He will play, and will he have another big game? Who knows, but it will be fascinating to see after Harry Redknapp valued him at £80 million. It seems since Andy Carrol, football valuations have gone cerazy.
Finally, predictions. Despite Jose Mourinho saying 0-0 is a 'good result', Madrid should make moves towards winning the tie tonight. Despite the loss at the weekend to Gijon, the Bernebau is still a fortress and I predict they will win 2-0.
