According to many news outlets, including The Globe and Mail, an insider in the Atlanta Thrashers organization has confirmed that the Thrashers have been bought and will be moved to Winnipeg. The source has requested anonymity for obvious reasons.
Many people may argue that the Thrashers and others in the negotiation have said that major items still need to be negotiated.
However, don't kid yourself. These items were probably negotiated months in advance. They are probably trying to say that in a desperate attempt to get a bidder to keep the team in Atlanta, because I have a hard time believing after all the negotiations, there are still major items to be negotiated.
Now people may argue that this is unfair. The Thrashers fans, no matter how few there are, deserve better. Don't kid yourself. This is a business.
So unless those fans are willing to come together and pay tens of millions of dollars in losses that the Thrashers have every year, it is no longer possible to keep them in Atlanta. This is the business side of hockey. Sad, but true.
So will this shake up the conferences? Will there be changes made?
I actually don't think so. I think the NHL waits one year before doing anything to the conferences. Sure, it may give Winnipeg a disadvantage for one year, but it's just one year.
Eventually they will move Winnipeg west and Detroit to the East. Maybe just swapping divisions to simplify matters.
I know the NHL says that they don't give priority to Detroit in moving east, but this league lost a lot of credibility when they lied about not giving Phoenix a loan. So I firmly believe Detroit gets to move east, and they have first crack at it.
To be fair, I have no idea how the divisions will be changed, so I just assumed they would swap. Of course, that is the long term. I think for the first year they keep everything the same.
So there you have it. The Thrashers are moving to Winnipeg. What do you think? Let me know in the comments section.
