NFL Draft 2011: The Broncos Are Targeting a QB in Round Two
Multiple Reports Surface that the Broncos are Going to Select a QB in the 2011 Draft
The Broncos and their interest in a QB in the 2011 NFL Draft is quickly becoming the most interesting pre-draft story.
There are two school of thoughts on this. Either the Broncos are fabricating their interest to entice teams to trade with them (I wrote about this yesterday). Or the Broncos are legitimately thinking of taking a QB in the upcoming draft.
The idea that they are actually going to take a QB is gaining some serious momentum.
“I'm starting to think Elway might take a QB in the second round and call the Tebow selection a mistake.”
“I was told that the Broncos maybe interested in moving back into 1st RD for (Christian) Ponder, not trading down from No. 2 overall.”
Tony Pauline of SI.com and DraftInsider.net reported:
“Sources have told us a while ago they expect the Denver Broncos to draft a quarterback this year and it could be early. Many familiar with the situation told us Tim Tebow is not the quarterback for John Elway, and with the future Hall of Fame passer calling many of the shots for the franchise a signal caller is a priority. Colin Kaepernick of Nevada at the top of round two makes the most sense.”
If the Broncos aren't actually going to draft a QB they are doing a great job of making teams think they will.
The most curious thing about the these comments is that they all point to the Broncos selecting a QB in with their second selection. This leads me to believe in the validity of these reports. This will do little to raise the interest of QB hungry teams in trading up for the Broncos pick.
The best strategy would be for the Broncos to trade down. This draft is loaded with defensive talent. If they trade down in the first-round they could pick up an extra second and possibly a later round pick.
This would allow them to select one of their targeted QBS and load up on defensive talent.
In light of these rumors, I'll be back later with scouting reports and news on some of the late first-round and second-round QB prospects.
